The Fidonews at a Glance
No Confessions left and no Catcalls this week, but Michiel sent in his
follow-up, as promised in the FIDONEWS echo, on that Dutch kid that
was framed by the FBI; a rebuttal to Luke's article last week in
"Framed in cyberspace by the FBI. A follow up.".
Petko Bossakov goes fido technical in "Optimizing modem connections
on poor telephone lines". Much of it may seem elementary and obvious
to those of us that's been around fidonet for many years, but remember
it wasn't always that way for us. I think it's a good initiative by
Petko, to take up things for those that haven't years of fido
experience.
Todays dish in our international kitchen is "Carol's Gizzard Soup".
I hope it tastes better than it sounds. :)
A thin issue, once again this week. All we have left now, is a joke
from our old jokemaker, Warren Bonner. This week's joke is about a
real male chauvinist pig, it's "Observations on an Older Woman".

REBUTTALS TO PREVIOUS ARTICLES
=================================================================
Framed in cyberspace by the FBI. A follow up.
By Michiel van der Vlist, 2:280/5555
It was with mild surprise and mixed feelings that I took notice of
Luke Kolin's comment on my previous article. Pleasant surprise because
at least I attracted someone's attention. Less pleasant because his
display of total lack of understanding of the point of view of Menno
B's countrymen.
He can not resist laughing he says. I wonder if he'd still be laughing
if the shoe were on the other foot. More about that later. Luke Kolin
has a daughter he says. Well, so have I. She has a child of her own
now, so I need not worry about her virginity any more. But there was a
time she was fourteen too. When she was I didn't round up a posse to
ward off potential attackers of said virginity. That's a lost cause
anyway. Who wants his daughter to be a non? No, I subsided to the
inevitable and educated her on contraceptives and sexually transmitted
diseases. That is what responsible parents do. They guide their
children into life rather than shield them from it.
Luke Kolin is happy to see the FBI working to stop individuals to take
sexual advantage of children he says. One may wonder who is taking
sexual advantage of whom. As I see it it is the FBI taking advantage
of Menno B's hormone flow.
He then drifts into a scenario that assumes the girl really existed.
Ok, let's play along and assume for a while. Menno B. would have had
the shit beaten out of him by the father of the girl he says. Perhaps
even be shot. Really? Do US fathers all suffer from tunnel vision?
Should the father not have educated his daughter about the perils of
engaging in contact via the InterNet rather then try to amend his own
shortcomings in the area of parental guidance with a shotgun?
With a father like that the couple would have been wise to let the
girl come to The Netherlands instead. Safely out of reach of both the
father, his posse and the FBI. Let's consider that alternative for a
moment. Would there have been a conviction if it hadn't stopped at the
intention and the boy and the girl eventually had sex? Extremely
unlikely. Only a desperate overzealous police man unable to find a
real crime would go for it. If it ever came to court the judge would
most likely reason that, if the girl - after having exchanged all the
sexually tainted massages - goes through the trouble to meet the boy
across a continent, she obviously consents. The fact that she is a
mere two years under the age of consent would have been written off as
a technicality. You see we do not consider sex with a fourteen year
old such a big deal. /If/ there is full consent. As a matter of fact
about a decade ago there was a proposal to reduce the age of consent
to twelve. It didn't make it, but there was considerable support. With
a consenting fourteen year old? Yes, technically it is against the law
but I'd say it is not considered any worse than a parking violation.
Nobody goes to jail for a parking ticket. Not in a civilized country.
FIDONEWS 19-28 Page 4 15 Jul 2002
Not in my country.
Yes, the idea of a fourteen year old girl having sex can be pretty
unsettling for the father. My daughter is thirty two now. It's
eighteen years ago that she was fourteen. But I haven't forgotten. How
can one forget? It sure stirred up some emotions when my daughter was
that age and the cloud of ferromones started to build up around our
house. Yes, I was upset when the young men (kids?) with their motor
cycles began to assemble on the street in front of my house. I admit
to having once send my German sheepdog into the crowd after severe
provocation. (And recalling him half way.) After that incident I
started using my brain instead of my genes to handle the situation and
I realized one can not successfully oppose nature. Guarding one's
daughter's virginity with dogs, guns and chastity belts isn't the
answer.
Back to the assumption: the girl really existed and came to The
Netherlands. In the unlikely event any of the parents would have
attempted to solve the problem the way the girl's father would have
according to Luke Kolin, surely they would have gone to jail for it if
it happened in the Netherlands. It is against the law here to molest
would be sons in law. And that law is enforced. No, the judicial
system here does not make use of a jury.
Sure, laws are different in different countries. What is legal here
may not be over there and vice versa. I accept one can go to jail for
having sex with a fourteen year old girl if one does it within the
jurisdiction of the USA. But there was no sex and never could have
been; the girl didn't exist. Menno B. was arrested for having the
INTENT to have sex. Ludicrous as I find it, I may even be able to
accept that intent to have sex with a minor can be punishable as well.
In the USA. I have some trouble with it and I wonder how it can ever
be enforced. Most of the male population would be in jail if it really
were enforced. Did you, mr Kolin never, ever have naughty thoughts
when seeing a particularly attractive scarcely clothed young women on
the beach? A woman that happened to be just a teeny weeny bit under
the age of consent? Can you honestly say that you never had any such
thoughts? Never had any intent? Not even when you yourself were just
over the age of consent? I don't believe it. Not if you are a healthy
heterosexual male. Such a law is ridiculous and impossible to enforce
without thought police. But.... if that is the law, that is the law.
In the USA that is.
Intent to have sex with a minor is a crime in the USA. Even the FBI
can not read minds however, so they have to go on what behaviour is
displayed by the alleged offender. Consider how the intent, if any,
was displayed. Presumably in the messages exchanged via the InterNet.
If Menno B. displayed any intent to have sex, he displayed it right
here in The Netherlands. Over here intent to have sex is not against
the law. Minor or not. Intent to whatever is not against the law here.
Murder, rape or theft, one can not be convicted if one has kept it to
intent. One can be arrested and convicted for attempted murder, not
for INTENT.
Did Menno B. display intent to have sex with a minor? Perhaps. Did he
display this intent while under US jurisdiction? No he did not. The
FIDONEWS 19-28 Page 5 15 Jul 2002
messages were written here in The Netherlands. All he did in the US
was disembark from am aircraft.
Did Menno B. still have the intent when he stepped from the plane? He
says not and by the lack of competent mind readers, all we can say is
that we do not know. Not to know means no proof and no proof means not
guilty. Innocent until proven guilty. That's what the USA claims is
one of the values they defend.
I wonder how Luke Kolin would feel if the situation were reversed.
Guns are legal in some parts of the USA he says. Here they are not.
Suppose Luke Kolin has a son. Suppose the son likes guns. Suppose he
would be approached via the InterNet by someone claiming to have a
special gun for sale. To arrange the sale he would have to come meet
the man in the Netherlands.
How would Luke Kolin feel if his son was - when stepping from the
plane - arrested, tried and convicted for intent to carry a concealed
weapon?
While the gun never existed and the man posing as the seller was a
policeman in disguise?
Would Luke Kolin still be laughing? Would he really be satisfied with
his son being framed and going to prison for a couple of years for the
intent to commit a crime that doesn't even exist in his own country? I
very much doubt it. (And I might add that Dutch prisons are like the
Hilton when compared to American prisons; being on the receiving end
of a sexual predator's advances that seems to be the norm in US
prisons according to Luke, is virtually unheard of here) But we will
never know if Luke Kolin would have kept on laughing because it can
not happen. Intent to carry a gun isn't a crime here and even if it
were, our police doesn't provoke crimes. It's against our laws for the
authorities to provoke a crime because we consider that unethical.
Luke Kolin is happy the FBI is doing it's job of crime prevention. Did
they? Prevent that is? Not as I see it. What I see is that a crime was
fabricated instead of prevented.
Luke says the US has the right to enforce it's laws on their own soil.
Yes they have, I grant that. They do however not have the right to
enforce their laws on the soil of another country. That is what
happened you know. They provoked a citizen of another country while he
was not on US soil to send messages with a sexually tinted nature to
what he thought was a fourteen year old girl. Intent to have sex with
a minor they say. Menno B. was right here in The Netherlands when the
evidence concerning the intent was gathered. The US have enforced
their laws upon someone residing on Dutch soil.
Menno B. a deplorable criminal pervert? No more than Luke Kolin's son
dreaming about carrying a gun. Menno B. may have several shortcomings.
Naivety being one of them. In most likelihood he also was lonely and
lacked sex appeal. Why else couldn't he find a girl over here? But a
criminal and a pervert? Nah, he was just a lonely misguided kid framed
by the FBI. Because that what is was: framed. He would not have come
FIDONEWS 19-28 Page 6 15 Jul 2002
to the USA had the FBI not have an officer pose as a willing fourteen
year old girl to lure him into the trap.
Luke says I shouldn't be surprised when I get arrested in Saudi Arabia
if I respond to an invitation to a keg party. Whatever that is: a keg
party. Maybe, maybe not. I would be surprised however if the
invitation turned out to have been send by the Saudi police posing as
the keg party organiser. As far as I know the Saudi police, unlike the
FBI, does not manufacture it's own crimes.
Suppose it happened anyway. Does that make right what the FBI did
wrong? No of course not. Two wrongs don't make a right. And wrong it
is. Using crime prevention methods that are not approved in another
country against citizens of that country while they are outside the
crime preventer's jurisdiction is wrong. It is wrong, it is unethical,
it is arrogant and it is an infringement upon the rights of a
sovereign nation. No, I am not defending a criminal child abuser. I
would not defend Menno B. if he indeed would be a child abuser. I do
not condone child abuse. But there is no abuse. Where is the abused
child? I am defending a somewhat naive fellow countryman that was
lured into a trap set by the law upholders of a nation that has the
arrogance to enforce it's small minded standards upon citizens of
another state. Menno B. was framed. Period.
If the people of the USA feel it is all right to use these "crime
prevention" methods on US citizens, on their own soil, that is their
choice. But there it should end. They should leave the policing of
other country's citizens on other country's soil to that other
country's police.

GETTING FIDONET TECHNICAL
=================================================================
Optimizing modem connections on poor telephone lines
Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1
In my country, and probably in various other Fidonet regions
(particularly R50, to the best of my knowledge), the phone network is
extremely antiquated. Most of the exchanges used are still based on
analog selectors, as were the first automatic exchanges ever. In the
developed countries, and especially in the USA, this technology is now
nothing more than an object of hobbyist interest, with virtually no
practical value in telephony. Add this to the old, low-quality cables,
and you get a tremendous amount of line noise.
Modems were simply not made for such conditions, and their default
settings are usually not adequate to poor phone lines. Probably most
sysops living in such regions have applied various workarounds, but
the others, as well as most BBS callers, maybe do not know that some
tweaking here and there can actually improve the quality of the
connection, increasing its reliability and transfer rates.
INCREASING THE CARRIER LOSS TIME
================================
If line noise occurs, the modems may lose contact. They, however, try
to restore the connection for some time before hanging up. This time
interval can be configured, and its default is usually between one and
two seconds. It is a good idea to increase it, as this will basically
increase the modem's tolerance to line noise.
The waiting time is stored in the modem's S10 register in the form of
1/10ths of a second. To increase it, just add "ATS10=250" to the
initialization string in the corresponding software. Just a quick
note: in Windows you can locate the init string by going to the
Connection tab of the modem's configuration dialog and clicking on the
"Advanced" button. The init string is actually that "extra settings"
text field.
LOCKING THE DTE RATE
====================
This is a way to improve the throughput on both bad and good phone
lines.
Often the maximum computer-to-modem (DTE) communication speed can be
higher than the modem-to-modem (DCE) speed. In that case, upon
connection the DTE rate is lowered to match the DCE rate. However, you
may "lock" the COM port so that the DTE rate will always maintain a
set rate.
Why would you want to do that? Although it cannot increase the
connection's bps rate, it will improve the effectivity of the modem's
internal data compression algorithms, thus improving the transfer
speed for highly compressible data, like text. A locked speed too high
can cause buffer overruns, but the standard serial interface's maximum
FIDONEWS 19-28 Page 8 15 Jul 2002
of 115200 bps will do fine for most high-speed modems (33.6 kbps and
above). For 14.4 modems a rate of 57600 is suitable.
You may check with your communication software's documentation to see
how exactly you can lock the com port rate. If you use a FOSSIL
driver, you'll have to adjust its configuration as well.
HARDWARE SOLUTIONS
==================
The software settings can improve your connection, but they will
rarely compensate for a low-quality modem. It is a better idea to buy
a more expensive modem; this will pay off, as it will cost you less in
phone bill terms.
Over here the phone company has issued limitations on the length of
the phone cable between the wall socket and your equipment. Although
nobody appears to follow them, a shorter cable can actually decrease
the interference. If the cable is properly connected, and does not run
next to interference-causing equipment (microwaves, TV cables, etc.)
your connection may actually be a bit better.
Finally, there is equipment to isolate and prevent line noise. If you
can find a spike protector, attach it to the phone line. This is the
best you can do besides connecting to a digital telephone exchange.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES
=================================================================
OBSERVATIONS ON AN OLDER WOMAN
passed on by wdbonner@pacbell.net
It is important for men to remember that as women grow older it
becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping
as they did when they were younger. When men notice this, they should
try not to yell. Let me relate how I handle the situation....
When I chucked my job and took early retirement a year ago, it became
necessary for my Wife to get a full-time job, both for extra income
and for health insurance benefits that we need. She was a trained
lab tech when we met thirty some years ago and was fortunate to land a
job at the local medical center as a phlebotomist. It was shortly
after she started working at this job that I noticed that she was
beginning to show her age.
I usually get home from fishing or hunting about the same time she
gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost
always says that she has to rest for half an hour or so before she
starts supper. I try not to yell at her when this happens. Instead, I
tell her to take her time. I understand that she is not as young as
she used to be. I just tell her to wake me when she finally does get
supper on the table.
She used to wash and dry the dishes as soon as we finished eating. It
is now not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours
after supper. I do what I can by reminding her several times each
evening that they aren't cleaning themselves. I know she appreciates
this, as it does seem to help her get them done before she goes to
bed. Our washer and dryer are in the basement. When she was younger,
my Wife used to be able to go up and down the stairs all day and not
get tired. Now that she is older and gets tired so much more quickly.
Sometimes she says she just can't make another trip down those steps.
I don't make a big issue of this. As long as she finishes up the
laundry the next evening I am willing to overlook it. Not only that,
but unless I need something ironed to wear to Monday's lodge meeting
or to Wednesday's or Saturday's poker club or to Tuesday's or
Thursday's bowling or something like that, I will tell her to wait
until the next evening to do the ironing.
This gives her a little more time to do some of those odds and ends
things like shampooing the dog, vacuuming, or dusting. Also, if I
have had a really good day fishing, this allows her to gut and scale
the fish at a more leisurely pace.
She is starting to complain a little occasionally. Not often, mind
you, but just enough for me to notice. For example, she will say
that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills
during her lunch hour. In spite of her complaining, I continue to try
to offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even
three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind
FIDONEWS 19-28 Page 11 15 Jul 2002
her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any,
if you know what I mean.
When doing simple jobs she seems to think she needs more rest periods
than she used to have to take. A couple of weeks ago she said she had
to take a break when she was only half finished mowing the yard. I
overlook comments like these because I realize it is just age talking.
In fact, I try not to embarrass her when she needs these little extra
rest breaks. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of
freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. I tell her that
as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for
me and take her break by the hammock so she can talk with me until I
fall asleep.
I could go on and on, but know that I probably look like a saint in
the way I support my Wife on a daily basis. I'm not saying that the
ability to show this much consideration is easy. Many men will find
it difficult. Some will find it impossible. No one knows better than I
do how frustrating women can become as they get older.
My purpose in writing this is simply to suggest that you make the
effort. I realize that achieving the exemplary level of showing
consideration I have attained is out of reach for the average man.
However guys, even if you just yell at your wife a little less often
because of this article, I will consider that writing it was
worthwhile.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
