The Fidonews at a Glance
In number eight of the "Confessions of an Ex-Sysop" series by Steve
Townsley, he, among other things, this week tries to straighten some
misunderstandings from Andrea Santos' rebutt a couple of weeks ago.
This in the general articles section.
An article from Frank Vest was also inspired by a previous article
by Steve. It's about Steve's difficulties finding up-to-date
information about fidonet on the internet. Frank has managed to
compile quite a list of sites that may be interesting to those in
quest for information in "Some (not so) out of date Fidonet sites".
Luke Kolin too spends most of his writings this week on another
article. It's Michiel's article last week about the Dutch man (or
should I say kid?) that was framed by the FBI. Read all about it in
"Catcalls from the Cheap Seats".
In our international kitchen this week, Carol makes "Beginner Baked
Chicken #1". I wouldn't use the high temperature and the long baking
time she recommends, but I guess American chicken are bigger than the
Swedish, and therefore need that much more heat.
Finally a couple of jokes, as usual. Also as usual, one is from
Warren Bonner, "Italian Affair". A story that barely made it to the
Clean Jokes Section. Is this really a clean joke? Find out for
yourself! And then there's one, that I don't remember where I got it
from. If anyone sent it to me, the name seem to be lost. Please make
sure your name is in your submissions, I cannot always remember who
sent what. Anyway, it's good one (according to my wife at least) about
"Eve's problem".

GENERAL ARTICLES

Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (8)
Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org
This week I feel like a small boy being "rebutted" by Andrea Santos
(Vol 19 Number 23). She seems to think that I am making judgements
where there are none present.
Andrea was being a bit hostile. However I am a big boy now and I can
take it. For the sake of complete accuracy she should have mentioned
that her company (www.santronics.com) has a commercial interest in
developing BBS software. I say this not to attack her personally but
simply to say that when I ran BBS's they were done so as a hobby and
not part of any business. I am in no way resentful or sad because I
enjoyed Sysoping as a hobby.
Lets get things straight. I am an ex-sysop. I say that neither proudly
or as an apology. It is simply a fact. I don't need to prove that I
have a right to an opinion on FidoNet. I am totally non-judgemental on
why anyone runs a FidoNet system. I Sysoped when a 2400 bps modem was
$700 in the UK and my average phone bill cost was easily $100 per
month so I feel no need to justify writing a few words in FidoNews. I
spent 11 years as a FidoNet Sysop and I respect the views of every
Sysop who emailed me whether they agreed with me or not.
I am also not comparing the Internet with FidoNet or engaging in the
fruitless task of stating that either is better. When I say it is fine
with me to run a dial-up BBS I am not being condescending but quite
literal because I know running a system is hard work and also, for BBS
hobbyists, very rewarding.
The point she missed in big way is I spent the thousands of dollars on
PCs, modems, phone bills, etc. I used to run the US mail hour in 1985
with a Bell 103a standard modem - yes 300bps!
Writing in FidoNews was to first stimulate a debate about the future
of FidoNet. How can it meet the challenge of the fact that those who
dialed up BBS's now find it easier and more economic to dial the
Internet. How can amateur and hobbyist computer users develop an
alternative to the big boys such as AOL, MSN etc for such users in the
same way that local BBS' provided that alternative in the 1980s. How
do FidoNet Policy and technical standards have to evolve to make use
of both the traditional dial-up networks and the Internet.
If Andrea Santos looks around the web as I do there is precious little
information on how a FidoNet client can operate only from the
Internet. Indeed the official site of FidoNet (www.fidonet.org) and
FidoNet policy says you MUST have an accessible dial-up number to
participate.
I am not denying people use modems, BBS's, Fido, LP records or the
horse and cart. I am not denying that people enjoy using dial-up
FidoNet. What I am saying is that from 1985, when I joined FidoNet and
FIDONEWS 19-27 Page 4 8 Jul 2002
1996, when I left FidoNet grew from a couple of hundred BBS's to
30,000. In the same period modem owners called their local BBS and
long distance BBS' in great numbers. However the facts are that in the
last 7 years the FidoNet published nodelist has dropped by two thirds,
the only growth areas are in parts of the world that have recently
come out of communism or are developing phone networks and the
Internet has become the number one service that people call rather
than traditional BBS's.
Based on those facts I think the FidoNet community is in decline. Some
people may feel that this doesn't matter as long as they can run their
BBS and they can enjoy their hobby. I can agree with that and support
it. The broader statement I am making is that FidoNet technology and
the spirit that built FidoNet can be brought onto the Internet in a
meaningful way. If we consider the Internet merely as a transfer
medium in the same way we considered the public phone system a
transfer medium then FidoNet could actually grow and develop a bigger
community.
I enjoyed my time as a FidoNet Sysop and I respected all the people
who started BBS's and run BBS systems today. I think the FidoNet
community spirit was worthwhile and I feel it's tragic that Fido is
declining and it would be sad to lose that spirit that made Fido an
alternative to big corporate online services.
Those who think that my contributions to FidoNews have been a never
ending celebration of the Internet and a rejection of the community
spirit of FidoNet have mis-read my intention. I am saying that Fido
will continue getting ever smaller using dial-up technology and people
will enjoy it. But if Fido wants to make the technological leap that
Tom Jennings and co did when it started then Fido must go where the
action is. Like it or loath it FidoNet's audience has moved in massive
numbers to the Internet. Those users no longer use Telix or Procomm
and they require new sophisticated client software.
FidoNet has never provided connectivity conveniently or economically.
Setting up and maintaining a Fido node requires knowledge. Let's not
undermine the genuine skills in the Sysop community. Right now most
users on the Internet use nothing more sophisticated than a browser.
The average user cannot join FidoNet unless clients become easier to
use.
If FidoNet makes a technology leap forward I am unlikely to stay an
ex-sysop because the community will be interesting again.

CATCALLS FROM THE CHEAP SEATS
=================================================================
Catcalls from the Cheap Seats
By Luke Kolin
Apparently, I returned back to the Snooze just in time; we seem to
have received an abundance of material last week. I'm sure our editor
welcomed the new material - I'm sure he also appreciates the fact that
for the next several months, the Swedish national time has no further
opportunities to choke in key situations. (I sympatise - four times in
the past ten years my beloved Maple Leafs have reached the semi-finals
of the NHL playoffs and hacked and choked like a cat on a hairball.)
As an unpaid commentator, I personally love the opportunity to spout
off on the wacky and crazy opinions that get vented in the Snooze so
rarely these days. And oh, what a week! Where should I begin?
I'm sorry, but I absolutely cannot resist laughing at Michiel van der
Vlist's outrage at the human rights abuses occurring in the United
States these days, denying paedophiles their God-given right
(apparently) to engage in sexual activities with minor children. As
the father of a young daughter myself, I happen to consider it a good
thing that the FBI is working to stop individuals like the good Menno
B. from taking sexual advantage of children. (Now the cynic in me is
remarking that the reputed promiscuity of young American girls makes a
mockery of the age of consent, but more on that later.)
This commentator is but a recent transplant to the New South, but I
would suggest to Michiel that he may want to consider the alternative
to incarceration - let's assume this 14-year-old girl really existed.
In most parts in the South and West, if this girl's father ever
discovered what happened, Menno B. would have one of two things happen
to him. If he was lucky, Daddy would get three large friends together,
beat the living snot out of him, and then run him over with their
pickup once or twice to ensure the message sunk in. If Menno was
unlucky, Daddy would practice his target shooting with a 12-gauge,
using Menno as a clay pigeon.
Now our legalistic, law-abiding readers should be recoiling in horror
right about now. Surely, you ask, there's a legal system in place?
Daddy would get hauled into court, and get a trial by a jury of his
peers. For lay people, that means 12 individuals just like Daddy, not
a dozen Dutchmen with a predeliction for underage girls. At some point
in the deliberation, all the jurors with teenage daughters would ask
themselves what THEY would do in such a circumstance. And a few
minutes later the not guilty verdict would be handed down. Case
dismissed.
Considering the alternative, Menno B. is pretty lucky that he only got
incarcerated for two years, after which he'll be deported and
permanently barred from re-entering the United States. (Two years in a
prison should be enough to teach Menno how unpleasant it is to be on
the receiving end of a sexual predator's advances.)
FIDONEWS 19-27 Page 6 8 Jul 2002
I find it absolutely hillarious that Michiel will claim injustice, by
claiming that what Menno was doing was not a crime in the Netherlands.
There are two huge flaws with this reasoning: first, lawmakers down
here have a quaint habit of not waiting for the horse to escape before
closing the barn door, so to speak. If I intend to kill someone,
purchase a firearm and get stopped on my way to their house, I can
still be convicted of attempted murder even if I never get a shot off.
The active intent to commit a criminal act should be a crime - we want
our governments to PREVENT crime, not just to wait helplessly until
there is a crime to react to.
Second, in certain jurisdictions within the United States it is
perfectly legal to carry a concealed handgun in my automobile, while
driving down the Interstate at 130km/h drinking a beer. Allow me to
suggest that if I were to attempt to do this in the Netherlands, the
fact that it was entirely permissible within my own country would not
carry much weight with the Dutch police, or the Dutch people in
general. They hold certain views on drinking, driving and firearms
and have legally and properly enshrined their views in the laws of the
land. What gives me the right to go to their country and violate those
laws becuase I don't feel like obeying them?
I find it delicious with irony that Europeans are constantly
complaining about either the extra-territoriality of American laws, or
of "ugly Americans" ignoring the local customs and laws. Now we have
Michiel considering it to be an "atrocity" where America chooses to
enforce its own laws on child molestation on its own soil. Human
rights used to be a noble cause and calling. If this is what it's
stooped to, defending the "rights" of foreign child molesters,
dictatorship is just around the corner because we've given rights such
a bad name.
Michiel, let's be clear about this situation. Menno B is a deplorable,
criminal little pervert. He was not "framed" - that would imply that
he did not intend to commit the act he is charged with.
You are defending a criminal child abuser, and the fact that your
nation doesn't have an applicable law on the books doesn't mean
perverts like Menno can come to my country and behave as they wish.
That's what national sovreignty is all about. (As a further hint: if
you get an invite over the Internet to attend a giant keg party in
Saudi Arabia, don't be surprised if you're arrested when you go there
and they give you 40 lashes or chop your hand off or whatever it is
they do there.)
Continuing on my legalistic vein, I see Frank Vest continuing on
regarding this Policy amendment. Being somewhat detached from the
FidoNet echos these days, I'm not sure what policy amendment Frank is
referring to this time. Is it the same non-amendment we had four
months ago that essentially said "What is old is new, and the
mechanism for Policy amendments will not change." Now were I to be a
conspiracy theorist, I'd be convinced that Frank is trying to pull the
wool over our eyes, by making the false claim that the change was
announced in "last week's FidoNews". Well, I checked issue #25 of the
Snooze for the word "policy" or "FIDOPOLS", and I couldn't find a darn
thing. Is it because this change that Frank is referring to is
FIDONEWS 19-27 Page 7 8 Jul 2002
non-existent in its effects as well as its content?
I often am exposed to advertisments that advertise all sorts of
wonderful benefits from the use of a particular product. After reading
Frank's post, I'm feeling a tingly sense of deja vu. If all these
wonderful changes stem from the non-amendment proposed (and panned by
yours truly) several weeks ago, I'm going to have some real fun in
next week's article. We'll see.

Some (not so) out of date Fidonet sites
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
Last week there was an article from Steve Townsley. In the article,
he talked about some plus sides of Fidonet, but also mentioned some
negative aspects. One negative was the lack of up to date web sites.
Much as I would like to dispute Steve in his findings, I can not.
There are too many Fidonet sites that are out of date, not maintained
or just plain deserted and left to rot. So, with this article, I offer
a short list of sites that are up to date and do have what I would
call useful information.
http://www.fidonet.ca
This site is a good base site to start with. The information is
fairly up to date.
http://biseonline.com/r19
This is the Region 19 site. It is designed and maintained by me,
Frank Vest, with the help and input of the Region. I can't promise
total accuracy in all areas, but at least it is updated and has some
useful information on it. :-)
One can also find information on some BBS/Fidonet programs via the
"help" page and, if you look hard enough, there is a link to a
"Fidonet Search Engine" there. It's rather lean in results, but there,
none the less.
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/flv/
Not as up to date as it should be, this is the Collin County Station
BBS site. Another site designed and "maintained" by Frank Vest. I know
there are some rough spots in it. I'll admit to slacking on the
maintenance. :) Still, it will point one to some places to look for
info on Fidonet.
http://www.fidonews.org/
What more can be said? This is the "Fidonews" site. It is well
maintained. Not only can you read the great articles sent in by myself
and others here, but there is a discussion forum, links to software,
the Nodelist and other information of interest. Note should be taken
that the webmaster of this site is no longer in Fidonet, but maintains
the Fidonews site better than many who are "concerned" about Fidonet.
Maybe some of us still in Fidonet should take lessons... or get off
our ass and practice what we preach.
Now that we have some "general" sites out of the way, let's get to
some program sites and other aspects.
http://pcmicro.com/netfoss/
NETFOSS allows DOS based BBS programs to to be used across any
TCP/IP network, including the internet.
FIDONEWS 19-27 Page 9 8 Jul 2002
NETFOSS is not a virtual modem. It will not support AT commands, and
will not simulate a COM port. It is also not a telnet server. If this
is what you are looking for, you should look at COM/IP (available from
our home page).
http://husky.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/
This is the "Husky" project page.
The goal of this project is to develop a complete freeware suite of
Fidonet applications, running under Linux and other
multitasking/multiuser systems. The suite should be comparable to now
existing (and partly commercial) OS/2 systems. Most of the software
here is GPLed unless otherwise specified. To keep the configuration
simple and reliable, all applications should use one set of
configuration-files.
http://www.allensoftware.com/
Home of Netmodem. A modem emulation program to allow Dos based
communication programs to be accessed via TCP/IP
http://net229.darktech.org/fidosetup/
This page is well done and is very helpful for those wanting to set
up Synchronet BBS with Argus mailer for Fidonet.
Of course, what would a list be without something for our Fidonet
Points? :-)
http://www.openxp.com/
The Open XP project
CrossPoint (XP) is a text-based mailer for various BBS nets like
FidoNet, Z-Net and MausNet as well as Internet mail and news. In
December 1999 the author of CrossPoint, Peter Mandrella, released
CrossPoint v3.20ß sources to the public.
Since then many people worked on these sources - OpenXP has been born.
http://www.apoint-mail.de/
{ENGLISH]
APoint is a program for writing, reading, sending and receiving of
Mail. It can handle the techniques used in Internet as well as those
used in FidoNet. For the use in the Internet APoint provides an E-Mail
client and an offline newsreader. For the use in FidoNet APoint is a
complete point program.
So, this is a short list of sites that I know about. Yes, Virginia,
there is a Fidonet out there. It's not impossible to find. It is in
the heart and soul of all of us that love it and keep it going. :)
Regards and best wishes,

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Beginner Baked Chicken #1
Yield: 8 Servings
1 Whole Chicken, 3 lbs or less
1 sm Bag pepperidge farm stuffing
Salt and Pepper to taste
3 tb Water
Ok, having seen not just a few queries from folks who want to cook
but dont have the starting know-how, here is a really easy thing to
make.
Nothing is more simple than baking a chicken. Its just the fancy
additives others do that make it sound hard. This one is a basic
stuffed chicken, affordable for the average college student as well as
the new homeowner. The servings say '8' but that is based on just a
small portion each. It will definately feed 2, but 3 hungry kids will
devour this poste-haste!
Start by having a defrosted chicken on hand. Defost it in the
refridgerator 1 day before use or buy it unfrozen. Remove gizzard
package from the tummy area and save that for a soup pot. Now mix up
the pepperidge farm stuffing according to directions. Dont eat any as
it cooks! Wash your hands and stuff the bird, then wash your hands and
the pot you made the stuffing in (Mommie knows best this time.
Chickens are crawling with buggies that die when you cook it but arent
safe raw).
Now put that stuffed bird in a pan that is at least 1 inch deep but
more is better. A old pie pan or a slightly 'used' cake pan will do.
If you put foil under it, it is a really fast cleanup later.
Put the chicken in the oven at 425 degrees, for 1 hour then look at
it. Try to lift a leg with a fork and if it wants to fall off, it's
ready. If the flesh is still white and the leg fights back, its not
ready. Check again in another 1/2 hour.
Eat and enjoy!
Things to serve with this are many but here are some *easy* ones. A
small handful of raw veggies like carrots, yellow squash, green beans,
pea pods or the more traditional salad of lettuce. A potato or so
baked at the same time in the hot oven as the chicken. Crusty baking
soda cheese bread.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

Eve's problem
One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve calls out to God.
"Lord, I have a problem!"
"What's the problem Eve?"
"Lord, I know you created me and provided this beautiful garden and
all these wonderful animals and that hilarious comedic snake, but I'm
just not happy."
"Why is that, Eve?" came the reply from above.
"Lord, I'm lonely, and I'm sick to death of eating apples."
"Well Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man for
you."
"What's a man Lord?"
"This man will be a flawed creature, with many bad traits. He'll lie,
cheat, and be vainglorious, all in all, he'll give you a hard time.
But...He'll be bigger, faster and will like to hunt and kill things.
I'll create him in such a way that he will satisfy your physical
needs. He will be witless and will revel in childish things like
fighting and kicking a ball about. He wont be too smart, so he'll also
need your advice to think properly."
"Sounds great." Says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow. "What's
the catch Lord?"
"Well...you can have him on one condition."
"What's that Lord?"
"As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant and self-admiring....so you'll
have to let him believe that I made him first. Just remember, it's our
little secret. You know, woman to woman."

Italian Affair
By Warren Bonner <wdbonner@pacbell.net>
A wealthy American man was having an affair with an Italian woman for
a few years. One night, during a rendezvous, she confided to him that
she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage,
he told her he would pay her a large sum of money if she would go to
Italy to have the child. If she stayed there, he would also provide
child support until the child turned 18.
She agreed, but wondered how he would know when the baby is born. To
keep it discreet, he told her to mail him a postcard, and write
"Spaghetti" on the back. He would then arrange for child support.
One day, about nine months later, he came home to his confused wife.
"Honey," she said, "you received a very strange postcard today."
"Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it later," he said.
The wife did as she was asked, and watched as her husband read the
card, turned white and fainted. On the card was written "Spaghetti,
spaghetti, spaghetti. Two with meatballs, one without."

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
