The Fidonews at a Glance
In a guest editorial this week, Frank Vest vents some thoughts about
articles not always appearing in the first available Snooze, this in
his "Spanking the Fidonews Editor. :)". Something that, of course,
cannot be left uncommented by this editor, in "Article submissions" I
try to explain some aspects of that issue.
The motorcycle travel in the "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U"
down under, now has reached day eleven.
In "The 12 days of Christmas", Warren Bonner writes about what
seems to be a Christmas carol. I must admit this editor doesn't
recognize it at all, but I guess it's about something that all our
Anglo-Saxon readers are familiar with. I got some associations to an
old song, about a soldier and his deck of cards, that were his Bible,
his almanac and something more...
Another one from Warren, in his own column, "Life is a PARTY" is I
guess, best described as autumn leaves.
More from Warren, "P H I L O S O P H E R", about how you can use a
bucket of water to measure your own importance.
And finally (yes you've guessed it), from Warren, a joke that's a
variant of a classic theme, "IMPOSSIBILITIES".

Article submissions
In a guest editorial this week, Frank Vest vents some thoughts about
articles not appearing in time in the Snooze. In particular that call
for an FTSC election in last week's edition. Well, Frank, and everyone
else, with hindsight vision 20/20 and all that, it's obvious it was a
mistake to let that article wait another week (it had already waited
two weeks from the call for the election was made in en open echo,
until the submission was sent in). Let me just point out the
importance to clearly state in the submission mail, if an article is
"time critical". The editor doesn't always have the time to carefully
read through an article until it is picked out to be published, you
should not rely on a special sentence in the article to trigger an
emergency procedure.
When I'm at it, some more words of caution. Sending articles via
internet e-mail is perfectly OK. But be aware that the editor's
mailbox is constantly bombarded with hundreds of junkmail each week.
To select the few proper e-mail from all this garbage, is a really
hard task, and there's always the risk that real contributions get
lost between penis enlargers and Nigeria letters, unless you make sure
the header looks really, really OK (proper information in all the
fields of the header).
If you really want to help the editor, don't import the text into
the e-mail, send it as an attached text file (the good ol' DOS-like
*.TXT type, not some other format). If you also try to enter a header
in the article (as lined out in the end of each Snooze), it saves the
editor some ten to twenty minutes, and also makes it more probable,
that the article appears the way you wanted it, and not reformatted
the way the software, used by the editor, makes it.
The most safe way to send a contribution, still is via fidonet. For
100% safety, send it as a crash file attach to 2:2/2, then you can be
absolutely sure it will get through. But even a routed, fidonet
netmail is more safe than an internet e-mail.

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305
Day 11 - Wednesday 13th August (Mt Isa to Hughenden)
Bought Rick a few magazines and took them up to him. He hadn't slept
well the night before and was now having trouble keeping his eyes
open. We told him we were leaving Mt Isa today and wished him well.
Called in at the post office. No news of the parcel from Morgan &
Wacker. Called in again at Mt Isa Motorcycles, in case it had turned
up there. Still nothing. Suddenly the lady remembered that the Post
Office had notified her of some parcels to be collected. She said she
would go and collect them, in case mine is among them. We packed up
our stuff from the caravan park, fuelled up (with Premium Unleaded
Petrol ("PULP") - a real treat for my bike!) and went back to the bike
shop. Lo and behold, she had the part! Note: If sending for parts,
get them sent to me care of the Post Office - not care of a motorbike
shop.
At last we were heading east again, through the Curry, stopped at a
rest area for lunch, fuelling up again at Julia Creek. PULP again -
but 10 cents a litre dearer than Mt Isa. On the road again to
Richmond, then Hughenden - fighting a cold southerly all the way. Was
that why my fuel economy was so bad today, or is it the type of fuel?
Stayed in our usual place at our usual caravan park at Hughenden. Went
into town for dinner at our usual Chinese Restaurant. It is the
old-fashioned type of Australian Chinese restaurant - 10 pages of menu
items (not numbered, though) and served with a fork and spoon - no
offer of chopsticks. Run by a family - Mum is "head waitress", Dad
out of the back cooking, and the two teenage boys also waiting at
tables in between doing homework at one of the tables and watching
Home and Away on the big TV in the restaurant. We had a mixed entree
(1 dim sim, 1 spring roll and a prawn and ham toast, with a small
container of red dipping sauce). Then we both had "Sizzling King
Prawns with Garlic Sauce" and shared a small plate of fried rice.
There was so much, I didn't manage to finish all mine, but of course
David ate his all up.

Spanking the Fidonews Editor. :)
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
In the Fidonews Volume 19, Number 49 on 09 Dec 2002 the "Inside"
section mentions an article sent by Todd Cochrane as being a, "little
late", since it should have been in the previous week's edition.
I also note that articles sent by myself were "late". I mention my
articles to make a point, rather than to forward my status, ambitions
or whatever one might assume.
The death of someone in Fidonet is a sad event, and more so when it
is someone who was popular, important to Fidonet and so forth. Still,
the world does not stop for such events.
While many articles are of less importance than the death of our
friend, Bennie Hutto, there are articles that are of, at least, equal
importance. The announcement of the FTSC election, I believe, is one
such article.
In matters of time critical events that impact all of Fidonet, such
as the FTSC election, it is important to get the information out to
Fidonet Nodes. As I mentioned in one of my articles, the Fidonews is
THE newsletter of Fidonet. It is used to inform Fidonet of happenings
in Fidonet that affect Fidonet as well as other articles of interest.
I wonder what would have happened if there had been 4 deaths in
Fidonet... one each week for 4 weeks... Would the announcement of the
FTSC election or other events impacting all of Fidonet be delayed 4
weeks? I would hope not, but it appears that this would be the case.
:(
I do understand my articles being delayed for the death of our friend
Bennie. My articles were not of importance to all of Fidonet... at
least not to the extent of something such as the FTSC election.
Devoting a Fidonews edition to someone is a nice gesture, but please,
Mr. Editor, remember that there are time critical events that happen
in Fidonet that are equally important and should not be put on hold. I
don't know what Bennie would think about this, but I hope and think
that he would agree.
Regards,
Frank Vest - 1:124/6308.1

The 12 days of Christmas
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
I don't know how accurate this is, but it sounds quite possible.
What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and
especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to
do with Christmas?
A friend of mine apparently found this on the thanks to the Internet.
From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to
practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol
as a catechism song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden
meaning known only to members of their church.
Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality
which the children could remember.
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke &
John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books
of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy
Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution,
Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love,
Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness,
and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in
the Apostles' Creed.
FIDONEWS 19-50 Page 7 16 Dec 2002
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me
and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that
strange song became a Christmas Carol.
Have a Merry Christmas Season!

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Life is a PARTY
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
This was written by an 83 year old...
Dear Bertha,
I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and
admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm
spending more time with my family and friends and less time working.
Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor,
not to endure.
I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them. I'm not
"saving" anything; I use my good china and crystal for every special
event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first
Amaryllis blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market.
My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one
small bag of groceries.
I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for
clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank. "Someday" and
"one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary.
If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and
do it now. I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they
wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted.
I think they would have called family members and a few close friends.
They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend
fences for past squabbles.
I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for
whatever their favorite food was.
I'm guessing; I'll never know. It's those little things left undone
that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry
because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write one
of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my family and
parents often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard
not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter
and luster to our lives.
And every morning when I open my eyes, tell myself that it is special.
Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God. If
you received this, it is because someone cares for you. If you're too
busy to take the few minutes that it takes right now to forward this,
would it be the first time you didn't do the little thing that would
make a difference in your relationships?
I can tell you it certainly won't be the last. Take a few minutes to
FIDONEWS 19-50 Page 9 16 Dec 2002
send this to a few people you care about, just to let them know that
you're thinking of them. "People say true friends must always hold
hands, but true friends don't need to hold hands because they know the
other hand will always be there." I don't believe in Miracles. I rely
on them.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might
as well dance!! Happy Holidays!!!!!!
Warm Regards,
Ol'wdb

Sometime, when you're feeling important,
Sometime, when your Ego's in bloom,
Sometime, when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room.
Sometime, when you feel that your going,
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow this simple instruction
And see how it humbles your soul:
Take a bucket, and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it, up to the wrist,
Pull it out, and the hole that's remaining,
Is a measure of how you'll be missed.
You can splash all you please when you enter,
You can stir up the water galore,
But stop and you'll find in a minute,
That it looks quite the same as before.
The moral of this quaint example,
Is to do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself, but remember,
There is no indispensable man !

IMPOSSIBILITIES
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
A woman was walking along the beach when she stumbled upon a Genie's
lamp. She picked it up and rubbed it, and lo-and-behold a Genie
appeared.
The amazed woman asked if she got three wishes.
The Genie said, "Nope...due to inflation, constant down-sizing, low
wages in third-world countries, and fierce global competition, I can
only grant you one wish. So...what'll it be?"
The woman didn't hesitate. She said, "I want peace in the Middle East.
See this map? I want these countries to stop fighting with each
other."
The Genie looked at the map and exclaimed, "Gadzooks, lady! These
countries have been at war for thousands of years. I'm good but not
THAT good! I don't think it can be done. Make another wish."
"The woman thought for a minute and said, "Well, I've never been able
to find the right man. You know, one that's considerate and fun, likes
to cook and helps with the housecleaning, is good in bed and gets
along with my family, doesn't watch sports all the time and is
faithful. That's what I wish for ... a good mate."
The Genie let out a long sigh and said, "Let me see that map
again...."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
