There is something inherently wrong with a society that creates laws
to protect the people, then hires lawyers to determine the best way to
bypass those laws.

The Fidonews at a Glance
Back to normal again this week. First out is "A Slanted Look at BBSs"
by Frank Vest. Does anyone still remember this thing called a BBS?
Then we've reached day ten of the "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U",
the trip around Australia article, sent in by David Drummond.
In a guest editorial, another one from Frank. A recommendation,
"Using the Fidonews". Someone who followed this recommendation is Todd
Cochrane, unfortunately it's a little late (it should have appeared in
last week's issue, but due to certain circumstances this didn't
happen. "FTSC ELECTION UNDERWAY" is the name of this article about a
current event.
Sent in as a joke, I thought "How kids used to live" was better
suited in Warren Bonner's own column.
Carol makes a sauce, mainly for cooking meat, she's named the
recipe "Lood Meat".
A child joke sent to me by Ward Dossche, "Doggy story" can be found
in the jokes section. I'm not sure if it was intended for the Snooze,
but here it is anyway.
And finally Frank makes a plug for "Collin County Station BBS" in
the classified ad's section.

A Slanted Look at BBSs
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
A Sysop and a User in the Fidonews echo recently had a small
conversation about Fidonet. The Sysop views Fidonet as a network of
Sysops where a User is sometimes a pain in the butt. The User seems to
feel that Fidonet is somewhat opposite of this.
I'll agree that Fidonet, in the technical sense, is a network of
Sysops. The Sysop configures the software, hardware, has the phone
line(s) installed, gets the internet access and all the stuff that
makes the Fidonet Node function. That's why the name "Sysop", from
"Systems Operator".
On the other hand, let's look at a bit of the history of Fidonet. Tom
Jennings said that the most basic part of Fidonet is the BBS.
What many a Sysop doesn't realize/recognize is;
Fidonet was created for the BBS. Fidonet did not create the BBS.
There were BBSs around before Fidonet. The purpose, and creation, of
Fidonet was to allow communication between these BBSs.
This is much the same as the internet. The internet didn't create
networks. The internet was created because networks needed/wanted a
way to communicate between each other.
Even the Fidonet Nodelist reflects this. After the Node number in the
Fidonet Nodelist is a field for the BBS name (or, name of the system).
If Fidonet were only a network of Sysops, why bother with a BBS name
field there? That field could just as easily be left out, or be made a
"user" flag.
Yes, I realize that this is changing.... sad, isn't it? The "BBS
Name" field is being used for the IP address of internet Nodes. I am
not saying that this is bad... just sad that the field, that was once
used by programs to make lists of BBSs and find the name of a BBS in
your area, is being replaced. However, this article isn't written to
discuss the format, or use, of the Nodelist.
Anyway;
Without the Users in Fidonet, there would be little reason to have
600+ message echos. One message echo would do just fine. All of the
Sysops could connect there to complain about policy, each other and
whatever. Netmail would be where Sysops complained in private about
other Sysops. The one message echo would be where the Sysops praise
the ones they complain about in Netmail. Um.. er.. uh.. that sounds
familiar... :-)
FIDONEWS 19-49 Page 4 9 Dec 2002
Yes, Users can be a pain in the butt. Of course, that is why the
Sysops who still run a BBS make rules for their BBS. That is why BBS
software generally has security levels, "banned lists" and other
security options to deal with the pain in the butt User. In the long
run, however, the User is the reason for Fidonet to exist... just as
much as for the internet to exist. Without the Users, the Internet
dies. Without the Users, Fidonet dies. Of course, there are those that
think that Fidonet will still be operating. They are correct. Fidonet
will be running as a bunch of Sysops with 600+ message echos having no
messages except the occasional "Is anyone here?" posted by some Sysop
that happened to be bored that day.
Personally, if it weren't for the Users on my BBS, I'd probably drop
Fidonet and the BBS. I enjoy having Users call my BBS, play the games,
read the message areas and other stuff. That's why I run a BBS and why
I joined Fidonet. YMMV.

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305
Day 10 - Tuesday 13th August (Mt Isa)
Said farewell to Ron, then David and I went with Al Geritz up to the
hospital to collect Rick's bags from the publican from Urandangie. Had
a short chat with him. He confirmed that Rick came off on a straight
stretch where there wasn't any bulldust. He said they got him onto a
tarp, then slid that onto the mattress and 8 guys then got him into
the back of the truck. He said he would bring the bike into town on
Friday or Monday. There was another bike he had to take to town as
well, which had a big hole in the sump.
We got Rick's jeans, sneakers and camera out of the bags, and took
them up to him. He looked much better this morning. He didn't need
anything else, except his belt if we could find it. He asked us to
throw away his helmet.
We then went with Al to Campbell's coaches, weighed in Rick's bags at
25kg and sent them to Brisbane, addressed to Ron Durkin. We put Ron's
mobile number down as well. The girl said they would ring him when it
arrived. She then said she thought she knew David from somewhere. He
immediately denied it, but she persisted. It eventually transpired
that she had been a student at Martin College and remembered him as
the "I.T. Dude". Al was much amused by this and vowed to never let
David forget it!
Back at the campsite, Al packed up and left, with our well wishes. He
hoped to get as far as Winton.
We washed our sheet (silk sleeping bag liner) and pillow cases, then
headed out to Lake Moondarra, the water supply for Mt Isa. There
isn't any camping allowed at the dam, but by golly it has some nice
recreation areas - beautifully grassed with lovely big shade trees. We
walked over the dam wall and back, then sat by the water's edge with
the black swans, ducks and pelicans, to eat our lunch and relax.
Back in town, we did some shopping for dinner, checked the post office
to see if my part had arrived (it hadn't), and went up to the hospital
to visit Rick. He wasn't feeling too bad, although he said "Pain is
my friend". The doctor was about the pull out the drain on his lung,
so we didn't stay long. He had been trying to find out what would
happen about his thumb, but hadn't been able to get an answer.
Ate in tonight, for a change. We had bought a bowl of Garden Salad
which we had with chicken fillets cooked on the barbeque in the camp
kitchen. We finished off with a bowl of fruit salad and cup of Milo.
Went up after dinner to see Rick again. He was fairly bright. The
nurse explained that he wouldn't be flown anywhere for a while,
because of the problems with his lung, so he should expect to stay in
Mt Isa for several weeks. When he is well enough, he could coach back
to Brisbane (25 hours) or train, but that would be very expensive. She
said they never set collar bones, and they couldn't do his thumb until
his lungs are better, because of the dangers of anaesthetic. Rick
FIDONEWS 19-49 Page 6 9 Dec 2002
encouraged us to continue with our holiday. "I'm a big boy now" he
said.

Using the Fidonews
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
Maybe I'm preaching to the wall here. So be it.
Ladies and Gentlemen. One of the cornerstones of Fidonet is the
Fidonews. In fact, the Fidonews is quite likely the most important
medium in Fidonet. True, not all Sysops in Fidonet read the Fidonews.
However, the Fidonews is available to all of Fidonet.
Recently, in Fidonet, there has been a push for a revision of Fidonet
Policy.
Currently, there is a FTSC election happening.
Little coverage of these events has been in the Fidonews. Yeah, I
know.... "It's been discussed in <echo tag> for weeks now." ....
I hear this all the time.
True, this or that echo may be open to the public and very popular
with "some" Sysops. On the other hand, the Fidonews is /the/
newsletter of Fidonet. Contrary to popular belief, not /ALL/ Sysops
read, or even connect to, FN_SYSOP and other such echos.
Now, you're going to argue that "it's their fault if they don't read
<echo tag>" echo. That may be true, but, is <echo tag> /the/ echo for
Fidonet? The Fidonews is /the/ newsletter of Fidonet. An event such
as a revision of Policy, election of FTSC members and such that affect
Fidonet should at least be announced in the Fidonews with updates of
progress submitted to the Fidonews for publication.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Fidonews could, and should, be the place to
publicize Fidonet events, elections and other important happenings in
Fidonet. Fail to use the Fidonews for such things in Fidonet and you
fail Fidonet. JMHO.

FIDONET CURRENT EVENTS
=================================================================
FTSC ELECTION UNDERWAY
By Todd Cochrane, 1:10/345
I had been gone for a couple of months overseas and arrived home to
see a great deal of discussion in the FTSC_Public echo about the FTSC
being dead. There were talks about re-forming the Organization under a
new name and a couple of other rambling ideas.
All of the current Standing Members terms have expired thus we need to
re-fill those positions. I am one of those expired Standing members so
I felt it my responsibility to get the FTSC re-staffed with fresh
blood. After all A election should have been held last year but was
not.
I set off to find Colin Turner the current Adminstrator who's term is
set to expire in December I wanted to see what his plan was. His BBS
has been offline a few months due to massive hardware problems
compounded by moving. He responded to a e-mail I sent him and the end
result was he authorized me to move forward with having an election.
The FTSC Charter does not define well how the election is to be run.
Thus I utilized some common sense and In the matter of a few hours I
wrote the election rules. I posted them in FTSC_Public along with
several other worldwide echos. I allowed 1 week for the rules to be
commented on. I received no negative feedback and proceeded to kick
off the election. My goal was to have everything wrapped up before
Christmas.
I really should have posted a message in Fidonews immediately but I
neglected to do so. I may be late in posting a announcement in
Fidonews but it is not to late for you to become involved. The
election could have been over and done with but The IC sent me a
message last week in which he notified me that he had just found out
that an election was in progress we had been at it for 3 weeks
already. I was kinda of shocked thinking that the traffic in that echo
and the talk in FN-Sysop would have alerted everyone. Well I had just
closed the nominations and was proceeding to collect ballots. With
this revelation that I may have indeed moved to fast. I stopped the
voting opened up nominations for 2 more weeks and extended the
election process.
I have worked hard this week to get the word out and hopefully all of
the key players are now aware of the election. So here is your chance
get into the FTSC_Public echo and find out what is going on. If you
want to run for a office get your nomination and confirmation in via
the means laid out in the Election Rules.
I relaxed Nomination requirements for this election cycle seeing we no
longer had a active FTSC Standing member body to dictate the election
process.
I have removed myself as a potential candidate I will not run for
FIDONEWS 19-49 Page 9 9 Dec 2002
another term. The rules are fair and should result in us getting a
great group to further the FTSC Charter and insure that the
documentation of the Technical aspects of this network are maintained.
I hope that the newly elected Standing Members and New Administrator
have the fortitude to do what is right and broaden the FTSC Charter.
The election rules follow after my comments. To see a list of the
current Nominations and Confirmations please check-in with the
FTSC_Public echo.
One last point I assume 100% responsibility for this elections
success or failure. We are all human and this is just a hobby
but I will do my best to see we have a fair election

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
How kids used to live
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
What an eye opener!! You lived as a child in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60s
or the 70s. (Some of us in the 20's)!
Looking back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we
have.................
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a
special treat. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored
lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention hitchhiking
to town as a young kid!)
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
Horrors.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running
into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we
were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones.
Unthinkable.
We played dodge ball and sometimes the ball would really hurt.
We got cut and broke bones and broke teeth and there were no lawsuits
from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us.
Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and
learned to get over it.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda but we were
never overweight........we were always outside playing.
We shared one grape soda with four friends, from one bottle and no one
died from this?
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X Boxes, video games at
all, 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal
FIDONEWS 19-49 Page 13 9 Dec 2002
cellular phones, Personal Computers, Internet chat rooms..... we had
friends.
We went outside and found them. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's
home and knocked on the door, or rung the bell or just walked in and
talked to them.
Imagine such a thing. Without asking a parent! By ourselves! Out
there in the cold cruel world! Without a guardian. How did we do it?
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and
although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many
eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others so they failed a grade and
were held back to repeat the same grade...Horrors! Tests were not
adjusted for any reason.
Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. No one to hide
behind. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was
unheard of. They actually sided with the law, imagine that!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem
solvers and inventors, ever!
The past 60 years has been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
how to accept, cope with, ignore and/or handle all situations.
And may be you're one of them, if you are..... Congratulations! You
are (or may be), in my club!!! If not, you probably are a geek or
wizard or a or a "Fidonet Nut", <smile>.
Warm Regards,
Ol'wdb

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Lood Meat
By Carol Shenkenberger
Yield: 10 Servings
4 c Water
2 c Shoyu (soy sauce)
1 Star anise
1/2 c Rice wine
4 sl Fresh ginger
5 tb Sugar
Oh my! What a sauce! This is simple easy cookery. Basically you
make a boiling sauce of the above, then boil the meats in it. Suits a
whole chicken, chopped chicken, beef, pork, or even lamb! Especially
good at tenderizing cheap cuts of meat.
Note it is also listed as 'low-fat'. Humm? Well this method of
cooking the meat, tends to make a lower fat meat as much of the fats
end up in the sauce. The chicken will come out even *better* if you
skin it first.
Cost factor: You can use this boiling sauce almost forever if you
refridgerate it between uses and boil it with each use.
Alternate spices: add chinese 5 spice! Use a sprig of fresh anise
leaves!

Doggy story
By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
A little girl asked her mother, "Mom, may I take the dog for a walk
around the block?". Mom replies, "No, because she is on heat." "What's
that mean?" asked the child. "Go ask your father. I think he's in the
garage."
The little girl goes to the garage and says, "Dad, may I take Belle
for a walk around the block? I asked Mom, but she said the dog was on
heat, and to come to you".
Dad said, "Bring Belle over here." He took a rag, soaked it with
petrol, and scrubbed the dog's backside with it and said, "Okay, that
should take care of that problem, You can go now, but keep Belle on
the leash and only go one time around the block."
The little girl left, and returned a few minutes later with no dog on
the leash.
Surprised, Dad asked, "Where's Belle?" The little girl said, "She ran
out of petrol about halfway around the block, so another dog is
pushing her home".

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
