EDITORIAL

The NETSTATS program
In the late 1980s Justin Marquez of 1:106/100 wrote a program that
analysed the nodelist and created quite a lot of statistics. It was
written in TurboPascal 5 and an unknown number of versions existed
before the final release to the world, v2.0. It was released at July
13, 1989.
In May 28, 2001 the former Fidonews editor, Frank Vest, silently
published the first output from the program, and since then it's been
a standing article, now in the Special Interest column.
Now, as we all know, a lot have happened to Fidonet since 1989, the
output from the program has become more and more obsolete -- and some-
times even erroneous, something that has been pointed out to me
several times, and I've tried to correct it as the reports have been
made.
But now I've made a long overdue update of the program. Among other
things I've replaced the File Freq Flags list (that probably wasn't
very accurate anyway) with an IP Flags list. Feel free to check it out
and report anything that you think is wrong with it to me, please.
Futhermore, if you have ideas about what other statistics you'd
like to see, I'm open for suggestions. The various modem flags, for
instance, isn't all that interesting any more, are they?

At the same time I discovered that the DAT file that the program
also writes to as some kind of log file, was complete from September
12, 1997. Yes, that's right, full nodelist statistics for more than 17
years! Well, there may be a couple of weeks missing (because the diff
did not arrive properly) and there may be a couple of dups caused by
me testing a new version, but all in all it should be a goldmine for
all you statistics fans out there.
This file, a comma delimited text file, the first line with a short
description of each column, can now be downloaded as:

If there's a big enough interest I might update this file each week
after the latest run of NETSTATS.

Voting for FTSC membership has come to end. The results are
preliminary as there is a one week period for reporting inconsis-
tencies and filing complaints. If no vote is contested the results
will become final on Sunday 30 November 2014, 20:00 UTC.

The Johan Billing JamNNTPd project
This is a list of known JamNNTPd servers working. They are essentially
the modern version of Bulletin Board Systems.
You connect to them using the email client of your choice and you
don't need any other software installed on your computer -- regardless
of operating system -- but that favourite mail client of yours.
Even smart phones can handle this, giving you the opportunity to get
your daily doses of fidonet on the bus, tram or train on the way to
your job, school or whatever.

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably
quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.

encouraged to send their articles in ASCII text to the Editor
at one of the addresses above.
The weekly edition of Fidonews is distributed through the file
area FIDONEWS, and is published as echomail in the echo FIDONEWS.
The different articles are distributed in the file area SNOOZE.
A service to various projects for making Fidonews available on
