FIDO-HISTORY PROJECT 3rd Generation
By Ulrich Schroeter
2:244/1120
One Short Question
The last Datteln Euro Con IV has passed without a note in the snooze
but the meeting in the beginning year 2007 results with some fido-
historical material that has been published since that on the web.
Steven Leeman started publishing pictures from this international
session on the web. A documentary film has been made late in the
evening on January, 8th. Participients were: from Belgium -
Ward Dossche, Steven Leeman from Netherlands - Michiel van der Vlist,
Kees van Eeten, from Germany - Alex Woick, Robert Bashe,
Uli Schroeter and from Russia - Vladimir Donskoy. Via video
conferencing from Sweden - Bjoern Felten.
Now about 2 months later, in the meanwhile storm Kyrill passes
Europe, but one short simple question from Steven will still left
open:
Where to find old Nodelists?
The Collection
I'll remember me about a resigned fidonet member Gisbert Rudolph
who has an archive of nodelists and nodediffs collected until his
resign. But Gisbert leaves Fidonet about 2004. So where can the
archive been restored?
I've phoned him and asked him if its possible to recover his work.
Gisbert gaves me his ftp address where i've got the hole archive.
I've informed Steven, that i've found and reopened the collection.
By the information from Gisbert and others, Gisberts archive was
collection of other archives starting from the old yet offline
FIDO-HISTORY PROJECT ftp://ftp.fidonet.org/fido-history
The archive has been filled from around the world where old lists
fidonews and paperwork has been recovered.
Gisbert adds the Region 24 pointlist distribution to the archive
and other Region 24 related material and updated the archive
between 1995 and 2004.
Updating
Once the archive i've copied to my system i've started updating
the archive upto actual issues of Fidonews, Nodelist, Nodediff,
Region 24 Fakenet Pointlist and -Diff, Region 24 Boss Pointlist
and -Diff. As the R24 RPK i've also have had an archive of
R31, R28 and the Zone Pointlists. So i've also addeded these
files to the archiv.
As of a system crash on my local system in about 2003 i've lost
most of the related nodelist-, nodediff and pointlist and -diffs
from about 2001-2003. But others i've could recover.
Michiel v.d. Vlist helps me, to complete the Region 28 Pointlist
FIDONEWS 24-11 Page 3 12 Mar 2007
segments back to the year 1997 he has starting his RPK job.
As of the different Pointlists formats i've restructured the
archive to reflect different Pointlist formats (Boss, Fake,
Fidouser, Points, Poss) and extracted all Diffs that has been
saved in one zip package on a yearly basis in the older archive
back to single archives.
The Scripts
Once i've noticed Steeven Leeman about the actual Nodelist
archive he've started using a php script that runs thru the
archive and lists all recovered and stored lists and diffs.
http://www.fido.be/nodelist.php
Dedicated to the work on another website, the nodelist_search
script by Jerry Schwartz and WriteByNight at
http://www.winramturbo.com/fnsp/arch-nodelist-diff.htm
inspires me to add a form to the nodelist.php script to
select the different lists archives.
In the meanwhile Alex Woick (2:244/1351) sends Steeven an me
a perlscript to import the nodelist (and pointlists?) into a
database to make them searchable. This work is still under
construction.
Teamwork
Most of all i've asked about old Node- or Pointlists sends
me their answer, that they only stores the lists of this
and the last year. But in two cases i've got archives from *Cs
that helps to get some holes filled. Developers are also
candidates where to find old list exspecially if they
programs mailer and nodelist distribution tools.
When have you looked thru your old floppys and tape archive
the last time? Is there a list not yet in the archive?
I.e. the starting Nodelist as you've started to be a node?
Do you have a complete archive of Diff files, but no
Nodelist? No problem. Somebody other comes with a nodelist
and together with the Diffs archive all missing Nodelists
can be recovered.
One idea, not to loss the archive again, is to mirror
the archive over sites. I've talked in the meanwhile
with Kees van Eeten and we comes to the conclusion, if
the mainwork of restructure and recollection is done
we start mirroring this project.
The 3rd Generation
The FIDO-HISTORY PROJECT that starts with the ftp archive
has been brought forward by the long work of Gisbert Rudolph,
the 2nd Generation. Now, with a team of supporters the
FIDO-HISTORY PROJECT runs into the 3rd Generation.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
