GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
The IP problem
By Matt Bedynek, 1:106/1
The cries of modem negotiations echoing through the hallway has now
been replaced by the silence of the TCP/IP three way handshake.
And, still, fidonet coordination has failed to update policy. What
disturbs me the most is that none seem concerned with this. It
seems that when people cannot agree on how to best implement the
IP standard that the discussion falls to the wayside and we remain
stranded on the derserted island known as P4. What does it take to
find a solution and compromise? Why must we give in so easily?
I am a regional coordinator, therefore, my hands somewhat limited.
I implement IP connectivity in my region to the best of my ability,
that which serves the interests of my region to promote growth and
reduce attrition. Unfortunately, these are using standards which
are somewhat unoffical as far as the whole of fidonet is concerned
and that are loosly agreed upon. But, anything less would hinder
the prosperity of the region. There are others in other parts of
the world that do not agree with how things are done here, and I can
understand how they feel. But, I believe that we all share the
blame, in part. Those who bend practice and those who do nothing to
establish a new one.
My position is this: 1) We have to allow any node to be listed as
POTS or ION or both. But we also have a duty to protect those who
might incur costs by misdial. We can also agree that with the wide
array of fido technology for IP that ION is a viable and integral
part of fidonet. -unpublished- without 'Pvt' has undergone a lot
of testing. We cannot test all software but the network has reached
a critical point such that some things might have to be broken to
move foward. -unpublished- can even be used on coordinator entries
and provides a nice compromise. 2) We need to agree on a single
method for POTS and IP. POTS has FTS-1 but this is outdated and
needs to be updated. All modern mailers support newer standards
(EMSI). For IP, BinkP is the most popular and should be the
standard. Those who run telnet gripe when we say BinkP should be the
IP minimum standard but those people ironically also run BinkP
anyway. Nothing says you can't fly flags indicating telnet support
or that you can no longer run it. 3) All nodes should have a minimum
of one or the other. Nodes that cannot be reached directly at all,
why are they not listed as points?
Even as more of us turn to IP because of cost, availability of
broadband, and outright simplicity, the most that has happened within
the upper levels of fidonet has been arguements over the IC position
and a few other trivial matters. Therefore, I put the question to
you: what can we do to find a solution? And, would you be satisfied
with methods you dont necessarily agree upon up front just so we can
pass the first hurdle? And, lastly, why must people make concerted
efforts to kill the discussion altogether when they cannot get their
way entirely?

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN

Risgrynsgröt (rice porridge)
By Björn Felten, 2:203/2
This is a classic Christmas dish in Sweden, but naturally it's a
dainty dish any time of the year. The kids love it. Make a big batch,
it'll keep several days in the fridge without problem.
For 2 servings:
1 dl rice
2 dl water
2 tbsp (30 ml) butter
3 dl milk
1 pc cinnamon (whole)
1 tbsp (15 ml) sugar
1 tsp (5 ml) salt
Put the oven on 120 centigrade.
Let the rice, water and butter simmer on really slow heat for 10
minutes.
Stir down the milk and the rest of the ingredients and bring to a
boil.
Now let it cook in the oven for 40 minutes without stirring. You can
of course keep cooking it on the stove, but then it's a bit tricky to
prevent the porridge from burning.
Serve with milk; sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon powder.

Moderating
By: Matt Bedynek, 1:106/1
(forwarded by Björn Felten)
For any degree of moderation to work, the users must either respect or
fear the moderator. A user who respects himself and the moderator
will likely never need to be moderated. That user may occasionally
slip up but a polite reminder is all it takes for common sense and
decency to resume it course. A person who has no self respect often
requires a third party to act as their conscience and intervene at
every turn can only be moderated through fear of losing their access.
If that fear is eliminated you have people swearing all sorts of vile
utterances, attacking one another, including any image of authority.
Think of Kohlberg's theory of moral development, if you're familiar
with psychology. To me, it seems, those demanding someone moderate
them by shouting "hey, asshole, moderate me!" are saying a lot about
themselves and their personality, and I wonder if they realize how
negative it really is.
You and those among you who share the concept this moderator is bad
could always go after them instead of attacking the moderator.
Perhaps you all could use a "social contract" to exact a "user
instituted feed cut"; imagine if you will, someone who is so bad that
you call agree to simply deny access to your system for a feed?
Hmmmm... Isn't that what a feed cut basically is anyway?

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
