Another fidonet profile has left us
I just received the word that Göran Eriksson has left us after several
years of health problems. Last fall it seemed like the doctors finally
had managed to patch him up, but unfortunately that was not true.
Göran Eriksson was maybe more famous in his home country Sweden,
where he was a coordinator for many years. He also was a member of the
FTSC for a number of periods, and there he often made great
contributions in the discussions as well as in document writings.
He was a very private person, that rarely let other people get too
close to him, just a few people really got to know him properly.
Unfortunately I cannot claim to be one of them, although I've met him
in person.
In this week's special edition of the Snooze you will find some
comments from people that came in contact with him more or less
closely. As someone said, almost everyone knew of Göran Eriksson, but
very few knew him.
I'm sure you have finally found peace now Göran, liberated from
your sickness-torn body that failed you in the end. May whoever is in
charge of the life after this be with you.
Frid över ditt minne, Göran!

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
Göran Eriksson has left Fidonet.
by Stefan Andersson, 2:203/216.
To us who knew him a little closer it was expected, he has been
fighting his illness for a couple of years now.
He was down to Gothenburg shortly after he had got the diagnosis and
came by to see me among others, he was a big fan of jazz music and we
have a pretty good jazz club here so that was the real reason for
coming down. While sitting and chatting about all and nothing he said
that if I promised not to tell anyone he would tell me something
special, and then he told me. The doctors gave him about six months
left to live due to the diagnose he got. Not much one can say when
someone tells you something like that...
We first got to know each other through Fidonet, I was a tiny hub
under the big, bad Björn and he was NC201 if I recall correct. We came
to discuss echomail and how costly it was to get international mail to
Sweden. This was back in the old days when we had a monopoly on phone
traffic in Sweden and different taxes depending on distance. Local
calls was not to high, regional was high enough to make people skip
certain echoes in order to reduce time. International calls where very
high, approximately one dollar/minute to the states.
My BBS was devoted to the compiler Clipper and my users was a user
group in Sweden, so I wanted the international echo regarding Clipper.
Back then it was a pretty big echo and I was the only one wanting
it... To solve my problem, and a couple of other people's at the same
time, we started a cost sharing group called FSED that imported the
echoes directly from Northern Star (if memory suits me). Of course, we
had cleared it with our REC first. After a while we switched to B.
Bodger who called us and delivered the post, the call from the US was
cheaper than us calling them.
This went on for a while, Göran took over the import from me since
Clipper was dying and the user group was shrinking fast. I left
Fidonet but kept the contact with Göran even if it was more sporadic.
He moved up to the north of Sweden and it was longer times between his
visit down here. When he became RC I really don't know, we didn't talk
so much about Fidonet during this time.
I did however once ask him why he had named his BBS GET, that's
Swedish for goat. Göran was a very private person, never spoke about
himself so I actually didn't expected an explanation. But at that time
he told me it stood for Göran Eriksson, Töreboda, he just took the
initials. That was the first time I got to know where he was born.
Töreboda is a very small place in the centre of southern Sweden. He
left it during his study and stayed in Stockholm after exam. He was
down there on Christmas and such holidays, but never moved back.
My thoughts goes to his family in Töreboda, it's a great loss for them
and we who got to know him a little more will surely miss him. I dare
FIDONEWS 23-27 Page 3 3 Jul 2006
to say it's a loss for Fidonet as well.
I will leave Fidonet now.

Again ...
By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
Again the Fidonet community is hit by a loss. Barely have we dealt
with the passing of Bob Satti and bad news once more is on the
horizon.
We mourn the passing of Göran Eriksson, the former RC20, distinguished
FTSC-member, sysop and friend.
Göran was some kind of a special fellah. He didn't speak well and at
times had to fight to make the words come out, but he possessed a mind
of an exceptional brilliance.
As far as I know he has always been there, I cannot remember Fidonet
without him being active in it.
We met twice ... July 2nd 1995 during the Eurocon-meeting in the
Netherlands. It was my first (and only) Eurocon as a ZC. Göran took
the floor and people shut-up to listen to what he had to say. He
raised issues, expressed concerns and knew no way around problems. To
him the shortest distance between two points was a straight line.
He was like this in Fidonet and he also practiced it in his personal
life.
When the tumor which was ravaging his beautiful brain grew out of
control, on very short notice he moved from the place where he was
living to a nursing home where he could get proper care. One of the
only things he took with him was his computer. Within no time at all
he set-up an IP-connection and ran his system there from his room.
During the Christmas holidays he sent us a photo of himself there
which I'm asking the Fidonews-editor to include in the archive of this
edition.
His new situation also meant that Göran could no longer perform as
RC20 so his duties were transfered to another person.
I was fortunate to meet Göran a second time ... Feb.27th 2002. There
was a business-meeting which I was attending in Lulea (Sweden) where
he also lived and we spent a couple of hours in a local drinking
establishment. Sweet memories of a great person.
Göran refused other people to take-over his life so when he was
diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, he consciously rejected
chemotherapy or radiation-treatment. It was his wish to ride the waves
his way and so he met his end ... his way. What else can I say about
that?
Göran was a dedicated Fidonet sysop until the last day of his life ...
his system polled my system every hour and yesterday at 11:38:13 our
connection turned mute. I made nothing of it then ... now I know
someone must have switched it off.

His last footprint on my system ... What a special way to leave
Fidonet ...
As far as I know there are no next of kin where one can send
condoleance-messages to, but he's got nothing but friends in Sweden.
People wishing to write something can address it to the
Fidonews-editor who will make arrangements for messages to reach the
appropriate people.
Göran, you will be missed...

Two voices from ENET.SYSOP
Sorry to hear that, as I'm sorry to hear about any longtime fido
friend who leaves the fold for such a reason. But I'm well aware of
what can lie behind the words "long sickness", and suspect that Goran
might not have been unhappy to see the suffering end. There are lives,
and there are existences: leading the latter is no fun anyway you look
at it.

On the passing of friends
By Michiel van der Vlist (2:280/5555)
Goran Eriksson is no more. Once more one of our dwindling numbers has
left the FidoNet community feet first. To me it looks like he has been
among us forever. Well fourteen years at least because 1992 is when I
first met him in ENET.SYSOP.
Goran was an FTSC member from at least 1997 until early 2006 when he
indicated he could not accept a new term for health reasons.
We lose a former RC, a respected former FTSC member, but most of all,
we lose a nice fellow.
With him we also probably lose the most northern sysop in Fidonet.
Lulea, 65.5 degrees north.
Here is to you Goran, you have earned your place in Walhalla!

Fidonet Related Websites
Thom LaCosta

03/14/2005
One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.
A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
site basis.
It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/
The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
adverstising revenue from ads.
Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
both rings.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art

Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
Best of Fidonet *.bof | Letters to the Editor *.let
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the
word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it
will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
folder.
Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
