Just because there are more stupid people in the world than smart
people, it doesn't mean the idiots are right.

What's the matter with us?
Well, honestly, what *is* the matter with us fidonetters anyway?
Someone, in the IC echo, raises a question about why some IP sysops
have not listed their nodes on any of the BinkP default domains, most
notably fidonet.net, and immediately WWIII erupts, going on for more
than a month, and even resulting in policy complaints flying all
around the place.
In another echo someone asks a question about how a mailer is
supposed to handle the seemingly empty MSG files, that most echomail
processors create -- kill the MSG before or after it has been sent.
And, once again, we stand on the brink of another WW.
Now, why is this? Are we so extremely focused on always questioning
everything, we do not even bother to think twice before we dive into
yet another endless debate?
Sure enough, a few seniors, still remaining in this network, are
the original rebellious anarchists, that once made fidonet possible,
but the majority connected to the network long after that, when it had
already been converted to some political club, that had democracy
written all over the network protocols.
So how come then, that we are totally uncapable of uniting on one
single issue without month after month of bashings, and after that not
even coming one single millimeter (that's one 25th of an inch to those
people that still haven't joined the rest of the world on the metric
system) closer to an agreement?
Well, if I had the answer to that question, I'd probably run for
office somewhere, like ZC or something, but I don't, so I guess I have
to settle for my tiny NC-hat for now.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
=================================================================
Letter To The Editor
Daryl Stout, 1:382/33
If you have an address, via netmail or email in FIDONews, or even
on a website of some sort...it'd be appreciated if you would please
advise the editor as soon as possible if there is a change...it can
save a lot of aggravation.
Case in point...I joined the FIDOnet webring last year that Thom
LaCosta has, but pointed it to my main homepage at www.wx1der.com on
the Internet. Since that time, I have switched BBS software to
Synchronet, and now have dial-up, telnet, and web access. I was
wondering if I needed to set up a separate entry for my telnet BBS --
but, I'd like to use the original code...since my BBS is down if there
are thunderstorms in the area (to protect from lightning),
maintenence, netmail, or a power outage...and when the BBS is down,
the telnet entry is as well. I'd like to use the same HTML code, if
possible, on the BBS website, and was wanting to contact Thom for his
feedback.
To make a long story short, I sent a netmail out last night, but I
figured that Internet email is usually quicker. But, when I clicked on
the email link for the FIDOnet Webring webmaster, and sent off a
message, it came back as undeliverable (no such user). So, now I have
to wait until netmail makes it back here...or if an email reply is
sent. I could have used that time to put the FIDOnet webring logo on
my telnet BBS homepage, and possibly get new members. But, since the
original email was bad, I have to wait.
I know peoples schedules are busy, and things get overlooked. Don't
let your addresses become "abandonware", like so many BBS doorgames,
etc. have done over the years.

CORRECTIONS & RETRACTIONS

Menno Blom follow-up
By Michiel van der Vlist (2:280/555)
Better late then never...
In Fidonews 19-26 of july 1st, 2001, I wrote an article titled "Framed
in Cyberspace."
I wish to make the following corrections and additions.
1) In the article I wrote that Menno Blom was convicted for "intent to
have sex with a minor". It turned out that while that was the initial
charge, it was later converted to the lesser charge of "chatting with
a minor about sex". This after Menno Blom had confessed to the latter.
2) In the article I wrote that Menno Blom was arrested on the airport.
It appears however that the arrest took place in a hotel in Chicago.
3) I wrote something to the effect that there was no official reaction
from the Dutch authorities. It turns out however that the Dutch
minister of justice wrote a letter pointing out that the deployed
method of law enforcement is considered entrapment and hence illegal
in The Netherlands. Also, what Menno Blom did is not illegal in The
Netherlands, where he was when the chats took place. The minister
asked for his release. The request was denied.
4) Menno Blom was released on May 22nd, 2003 after having served 21
month of his two year sentence.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES
=================================================================
A smart blonde
A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan
officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and
needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some
kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a
new Rolls Royce.
The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the
title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as
collateral for the loan.
The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the
blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000 loan.
An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the
bank's underground garage and parks it there.
Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the
interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are
very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked
out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we
checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What
puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?"
The blond replies, "Where else in New York City can I park my car for
two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"

Fidonet Related Websites
Thom LaCosta

One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.
A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
site basis.
It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/
The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
adverstising revenue from ads.
Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
both rings.

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.

will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper
folder.
Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article.
That way I will know to look for it.
