Cost Recovery for Expenses Related to your BBS
Shannon Talley
www.fidotel.com 1:275/311
Cost recovery is not a new idea, nor is it exclusive to
businesses. Most charitable organizations have cost
recovery business models setup which takes precedence over
their charitable cause. This is important because if a
charitable organization fails to function as an organization
due to lack of funds, then the organization can't assist
those entities for which it was designed to begin with. The
Red Cross, Salvation Army, PETA are examples of just a few.
Each of you reading this article has likely encountered
the expense related dilemmas of running your BBS. Software
registrations, new hardware, bandwidth, phone lines, and
other expenses I haven't mentioned can make this hobby
extremely expensive.
A typical BBS isn't necessarily a charitable
organization. However, the business model of cost recovery
can be exploited by the SYSOP to assist with BBS related
expenses.
One of the items which I initially employed for cost
recover is CafePress (www.cafepress.com). This is a really
nice idea for a site which allows one to start a store front
selling clothing and trinkets with your logo. Your logo
could be 'anything' in a JPG. CafePress doesn't require any
money to begin. All you need is an internet connection and
a JPG. They make their profit by the sale of the
merchandise and creating the merchandise as it's purchased.
One of my colleagues has taken pictures of his family
and created a virtual store front of merchandise with it.
He uses it to purchase merchandise for himself and other
family members at cost. I have another colleague who is an
artist and purchases his own merchandise with his artwork
from his CafePress storefront and actually places it in his
(real live) store in Virginia Beach.
Besides CafePress, there are other methods of cost
recovery. One of them is to offer Email services and
charge, or charge for games, or perhaps charge for online
access to your BBS. However, unless one lives in an area
where there is no ISP, charging for access to your BBS won't
provide the income potential as it did in the early 1990's.
Other avenues still exist. I found a niche with providing
web and telnet based collaboration services to Universities.
One of the most popular methods of cost recovery
appears to be web banner ads. Many BBS's today run web
FIDONEWS 22-13 Page 3 28 Mar 2005
versions of their BBS in addition to their Telnet cousins.
Synchronet and Wildcat! Winserver are two that provide
access to nearly everything their Telnet counterparts
provide to include access to Fidonet echos. Because of the
web access, one can sell rotating banner ads. In order to
sell banner ads, one must have the traffic demographics to
support it. If a sysop only receives two visitors per day,
they won't have the same revenue potential that one with
20,000 visitors receives.
Other potential cost recovery items have included,
Auctions (I've seen them on Telnet as well as the Web),
programmers have sold utilities (Fidonet and Non-Fidonet) to
support their BBS, and I know of a Sysop who attempted
(jokily) to sell his ex-wife.
In closing, if the cost of bandwidth has you straddled,
you need new hardware and software, consider building a
small business model for cost recovery. Remember to keep it
fun, and when you stop enjoying your hobby, it may be time
to leave it. However, if your cost recovery plan starts to
make you some decent income, perhaps you might have found a
niche to change your lifestyle and leave your office for new
personal discovery.

Fidonet Related Websites

One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to
visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet.
A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise
other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring
concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining
an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by
site basis.
It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running
system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at
http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/
The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at
google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on
adverstising revenue from ads.
Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or
both rings.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
