The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good
ending; and have the two as close together as possible.

GENERAL ARTICLES

Some Filk Facts
Kay Shapero 1:102/524
A recent FidoNews showed Ward Dossche praising a musical website of
Good Old Stuff. Thanks, Ward - and do I have some websites for
you....
Let me introduce you to the genre of "Filk."
If "genre" is precisely the term for a musical phenomenon which is not
defined by sound. Certainly if you ask four filkers you'll get five
definitions; like most living traditions, the minute you set borders
it drifts over them and makes rude gestures at you. :) The name
itself stems from an old typo in an amateur press association
contribution, by Lee Jacobs, intended to be entitled "The effect of
science fiction on modern folk music" (which consisted of a batch of
extremely bawdy ballads with the metaphors taken pseudo-seriously, but
that's another story.) At any rate, my favorite definition is "the
folk music of the science fiction/fantasy fan community.". Ultimately
filk is what the songwriter says it is.
Any musical style can be used to produce filk and, though Poul
Anderson's "Barbarous Allen", the first song ever to be labeled a
filksong was a parody, need not be parody or humorous, nor to an
existing tune. Nick Smith has a handout he takes to folk festivals
to explain it, which can be found at
http://home.earthlink.net/~kayshapero/filkdef.htm along with links to
some others. Those who write, perform or listen to filk are
collectively referred to as filkers - many (probably most of us) do
all three. Professional or non-pro musicians, all of us fit the
original definition of "amateur" - someone who does something for the
love of it. It's FUN! And a lot of it is pretty danged good, too.
Filkers can be found worldwide. There is a newsgroup devoted to the
subject - rec.music.filk which originated right here in Fidonet as the
Filk echo though it has since migrated. And of course there are
mailing lists and the like. For more details, I recommend the
rec.music.filk FAQ which I maintain at
http://home.earthlink.net/~kayshapero/filkfaq.htm and the homesite of
German filking magazine "Let's Filk About" at http://www.filk.info/.
There are many other sites of interest; the FAQ is to a large extent a
collection of links. See also the bottom of my index page for the
Filkers Bardic Circle webring banner, which links to many other
filksites.
But what does it sound like? Well, you probably won't find it at your
local CD store, since the average print run for a filk CD is apt to be
a thousand copies of less. You have to look a bit. For starters,
check http://www.filk.com for Filk Dealer DAG Productions (prop. Eric
Gerds) and click on the link to Filk Radio. The largest collection of
downloadable filk mp3s I know of is Eli Goldberg's "Virtual Filksing"
FIDONEWS 21-06 Page 3 9 Feb 2004
at http://www.prometheus- music.com/eli/virtual.html; there're also a
lot of Leslie Fish mp3s at
http://leslie-fish.clan-majere.org/mp3list.html. All of these are
authorized by the musicians in question. And if you're looking to buy
CDs of the stuff, I've got a list of filk dealers (at least the ones I
know of) in the FAQ. Or just check your local science fiction
convention. Good hunting!

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES
=================================================================
What not to name your dog
Everybody who has a dog calls him "Rover" or "Boy". I call mine "Sex".
Sex has been embarrassing to me. When I went to city hall to renew his
license, I told the clerk I would like to have a license for Sex; he
said he would like one too. Then I said, "but this is a dog." He said
he didn't care what she looked like. Then I said, "you don't
understand: I have had Sex since I was nine years old." He said I must
have been quite a kid.
When I got married and went on my honeymoon, I took the dog with me. I
told the clerk that I wanted a room for my wife and me, and a special
room for Sex. He said that every room in the place was for sex. I
said, "You don't understand, Sex keeps me awake at night." The clerk
said, "Me too."
One day I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began,
the dog ran away and a contestant asked me why I was standing there
looking around. I told him I had planned to have Sex in the contest.
He told me that I should have sold my own tickets. "But you don't
understand," I said. "I hoped to have Sex on TV." He called me a
show-off.
When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of
the dog. I said, "Your Honor, I had Sex before I was married." The
judge said, "Me too." Then I told him that after I was married Sex
left me. He said, "Me too."
Last night Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking around town for
him. A cop came over to me and asked me, "What are you doing in this
alley at 4:00 in the morning." I said, "I am looking for Sex." My case
comes up on Friday.

Golf Humour
By Phil Simpson, 1:229/3000
Four old timers were playing their weekly game of golf, and one
remarked how for Christmas this year he'd love to wake up on Christmas
morning, roll out of bed and without an argument go directly to the
golf course, meet his buddies and play a round.
His buddies all chimed in and said, "Let's do it! We'll make it a
priority, figure out a way and meet here early, Christmas morning."
Months later, that special morning arrives, and there they are on the
golf course.
The first guy says, "Boy this game cost me a fortune! I bought my wife
such a diamond ring that she can't take her eyes off it."
Number 2 guy says, "I spent a ton too. My wife is at home planning the
cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures."
Number 3 guy says "Well my wife is at home admiring her new car,
reading the manual."
They all turned to the last guy in the group and he is staring at them
like they have lost their minds. "I can't believe you all went to such
expense for this golf game. I slapped my wife on the butt and said,
'Well babe, is it sex or golf?' and she said, "Take a sweater..."

***tcRemoteAccess32 is back from the dead!***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
02-02-2004
An RA2.52 clone and FidoNet compatible BBS package
Developed by : Stephen Proffit
tcRemoteAccess32, a Win32 clone of RemoteAccess written by Niels
Schoot in the late 1990's, has been passed along to Stephen Proffit
yesterday, who plans to continue development.
tcRemoteAccess32 is a 100% clone of RemoteAccess 2.5, supporting both
JAM and Hudson message bases, the RA FileDatabase, and ANSI. It
includes an excellent GUI UserBase Editor, FileBase Editor, and
FileBase to HTML converter.
Niels Schoot ended development in November 1998, and moved on to
develop a web based clone of the once popular BRE door game called TEQ
Now after over 5 years, Stephen Proffit contacted Niels and asked if
he could ccontinue development as a freeware product. Niels agreed to
it, and turned all the source code over to Stephen yesterday.
Stephen Proffit is also the current developer of the BeeMail Mailer
for Windows.
***Renegade v01-10.4 for DOS released***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
02-Feb-2004
A full featured FidoNet compatible BBS package
Developed by : T.J. McMillen & Chris Hoppman
T.J. McMillen, and Chris Hoppman (aka: Exodus & Bluewolf) have
released another update to Renegade BBS for DOS on Jan 10th.
This update adds some much needed Windows timeslicing routines when
waiting for user input. This was a major problem with previous
versions of Renegade. It also adds the word "telnet" as a valid baud
FIDONEWS 21-06 Page 7 9 Feb 2004
rate, set by a command line switch which also prevents a pause while
renegade attempts to drop carrier after a user logs off.
It also fixes a memory bug when downloading with external protocols
and when swapping out of memory to run doors, and file sizes are now
displayed in KB and MB rather then just bytes.

***CrashMail II 0.7***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
03-Feb-2004
Developed By : Johan Billing - BillingWare
Release of CrashMail II 0.7. After a long wait, there is a new
version. The main new feature in this version is the new message
filter, but there are also several bugfixes and other improvements. If
you still use CrashMail, please send me an e-mail (billing@df.lth.se),
I am curious about how many CrashMail users there still are.
You might also want to check out my new project JamNNTPd if you have
missed it. JamNNTPd is a nntp-server which uses a JAM messagebase
which makes it possible to read and write fidonet messages using a
standard newsreader.
* FTP daemon leaked file descriptors, causing eventually
a hang, fixed.
* added configuration item to provide the correct runtime
library path for doors even when they are invoked from
a DayDream process invoked from the FTP daemon. Read
'docs/UPDATING' for more information.
* door programs could hang the board if they did not
connect the door socket, fixed.
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters.
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
