Thanksgiving in Japan
By: Carol Shenkenberger, 6:757/1
Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, which many countries celebrate.
The USA version is probably not very different in essence from those
of other lands. The date for the USA one is the 3rd Thursday in
November. This past Tuesday was a Japanese holiday, not too different
although the foods served are not the same.
Traditional Thanksgiving in the USA involves a large stuffed turkey,
mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dressing, gravey, lots of vegetables,
may also involve ham and/or salmon. It's a time when all the families
get together, often traveling great distances to a gathering.
For those of us living in Japan, traveling back to our stateside
families may not always be easy so we band together into our local
'families'. For the Navy people, that would be our 'shipmates'.
This year, Don, Charlotte and I, went to my ship for a good meal with
all the traditional trimmings. Our MasterChief turned MasterChef for
the day and made deep fried turkey, a dish I had not tried before. It
looked like a lot of work but the results were worth it! Being my
ship is in Sasebo Japan, which is a small town by Japan standards, we
all knew each other's kids and wives or husbands. About 20 of us met
to give thanks with our families and wish all a good time.
I hope your day was as pleasant!

The Continuing Policy attempt
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
The "on again, off again" process of modifying Fidonet Policy seems
to be on again.
Started by Bob Short some time back, many have worked on this effort.
Suggestions and discussions were originally made in the "FIDOPOLS"
echo and a draft was sent to the IC. It appeared that the IC had
"shelved" the idea. However, Ward Dossche has shown renewed interest
in the effort and the discussion is now continuing in the "IC" echo.
Mr. Short recently suffered a hard drive crash that caused the loss
of all his notes and the final proposal. With the help of Dale Shipp,
who is a major player in the effort, it appears that Bob will soon
have at least the final proposal back on his system.
As of this writing, the following RCs and ZCs were present in the
"IC" echo; 1:1/0, 1:10, 1:12, 1:13, 1:17, 1:18, 1:19, 2:2/0, 2:26,
2:28, 2:29, 2:30, 2:31, 2:46, 2:50, 2:51, 2:55, 3:75, 4:4/0, 4:80
Current Fidonet Policy was written during the time of the IFNA
(International Fido Net Association) and can only be changed by the
RCs. With the advent of the Internet and modern communication
equipment, much of Fidonet Policy is outdated.
If you are interested, and you really should be, please request the
"IC" echo from your uplink and at least monitor the effort.

BBS and FidoNet Software News
submitted by: Philip Lozier 1:267/169
Following are a few tid-bits of software development news related to
BBSing... I will try and submit any news of interest to BBS SysOps,
BBS users, and FidoNet related related software from any sources I may
come across them in my travels.
I would also encourage anybody reading to find the time to submit
anything of interest, no matter how small it may seem, to FidoNews.
Let's get this thing rolling again :)
*** New Renegade/DOS update! v11-26.3 ***
26-Nov-2003
T.J. McMillen, and Chris Hoppman (aka: Exodus & Bluewolf) have
released an update to the classic Renegade BBS for DOS today. They
were given the source code on November 14 by the previous developer,
Patrick Spence. Corey Snow is still in charge of the java version,
which will be a total re-write.
New features include:
Made NEWUSER Questions Configurable. Only questions that are required
are the User Handle, and User Password.
Extended FILE_ID.DIZ Description length from 10 lines to 20 lines.
Fixed: When a user was downloading or uploading a file, Renegade till
showed the user was able to be paged to chat.
Fixed: Bug in Renemail which wouldn't allow importing of netmail from
a FrontEnd Mailer.
Unfortunatly no improvments have been made to its heavy CPU usage
under Windows, so it still performs very poorly if more then one node
is running. But this is a great start, and hopefully these guys will
continue to work on it.

*** Mtelnet beta 12 ***
09-Nov-2003
Dink just released a new version of his Telnet Terminal for Windows
and OS/2, known as Mtelnet or Mtel for short..

*** Ambroshia 3.0 Released ***
07-Nov-2003
Tonite Dominic Carretto released version 3.0 of Ambroshia - The Test
of Time. This is a total re-write of the fantasy door game that
Dominic started from scratch 1 year ago. Previous versions were
written in Pascal, but Dominic re-wrote version 3 entirly in C++,
allowing it to be easily ported to other operating systems.
Ambrosia 3.0 is available in a DOS, Win32, and WinServer versions, and
a linux flavor is expected to be released shortly.
Ambrosia is a huge game in which you create your own Kingdom and
maintain it, from the tax rate to the building of a great military. It
includes over 1000 monsters, over 400 Weapons and Armor, and 100
different magic spells. It is shareware, with a $15 registration.
http://www.thebbs.org/ambroshia/
*** COM/IP v4 released ***
07-Oct-2003 8:05
COM/IP version 4 is about to be released. The main difference in v4 is
support for user authentication, using either the windows credentials,
or a unique login/password. This is not needed for BBS sysops, but
COM/IP's primary market is the business community.
As of version 4, COM/IP is now licensed by the number of COM ports you
wish to virtualize. Previous versions of COM/IP allowed up to 256 COM
ports to be defined for one low price, but now the (more expensive)
base price of $95 will include support for only one COM port!
Version 3 users can "upgrade" to a Version 4 license that supports 4
COM ports at no charge. If a user wishes to use additional COM ports
under version 4, they will have to pay the difference. Any BBS Sysop
that currently owns a COM/IP v2 or v3 license should hang on to it, as
they are now worth a small fortune since they support 255 ports. The
new price for a 16 port v4 license is $545.

HUMOUR IN A FIDO VEIN

Nimrod
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
The American language is so unique. It is said that Americans speak
English. I'm sure the English people would disagree with that. :-) In
fact, American english is a collection of words from all languages.
Maybe that's why it's spoken so much around the world and is the
language that Fidonet requires documents to be in... I don't know.
Anyway:
One thing about American english is its ability to take words and
give them new meaning. IE: Nimrod
Nimrod, as I remember it, is used to describe someone who is a bit...
umm... Well... anyway... kinda dim, not too smart and such.
Example: "That nimrod can't even tie his shoes right". :-)
From the Bible, we learn that Nimrod was a King. At the time of his
reign, all the people in the world spoke one language. It seems to me
that this was a good thing. No one had to learn a different language
to be able to get along in another country and if you happened to meet
someone, you could just start talking to them without a thought of
them not understanding you.
So, Nimrod was king. All the world spoke a single language.
Nimrod, in his "wisdom" decided to build a tower to heaven. I guess
that's a noble thought. Why not give God an easy way to get to earth,
right?? Anyway, the tower is being built. Nimrod climbs the tower to
check on the progress, and in a kind of challenge, shoots an arrow
towards heaven.
Well... God isn't too happy about this. Would you be happy if someone
built a tower towards your house and shot an arrow at you??
So God decides to fix this problem right quick. Since all the people
in the land speak the same language, it's easy for the people to
communicate and get things done. So God goes down and "confounds their
speech". IOW, he adds a bunch of languages so that people who once
could communicate easily could no longer do so. That made it
impossible for the work on this massive tower to continue and also
caused King Nimrod to loose his power over the people.
So you're wondering what the point is and what it has to do with
Fidonet? Well... We have this dog named Fido. The default language
that Fido speaks is english, but there are people from all nations and
languages that use Fido to communicate. This works, but there are
problems. People don't always understand each other. Arguments arise
because of the "language barrier" and other such things that people
speaking different languages run up against.
FIDONEWS 20-48 Page 7 1 Dec 2003
I'm thinking that it would be nice if the whole world spoke one
language. We could all communicate and not have to worry if what we
said would be understood or not..... Naw... Some nimrod would climb a
tower, shoot an arrow in the air and we'd be right back to square one!
:-))
Regards,
Frank

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN

Xxcarol's Refined Pancit
By: Carol Shenkenberger, 6:757/1
Yield: 6 Servings
1/2 c Chopped cabbage, bok choy
1/2 c Baby carrots
1/2 c Chopped green bell pepper
1/2 c Chopped brocolli bits
4 c Water
1 ea Pack Pancit seasoning
8 oz Dry pancit noodles (wheat)
6 ea Large shrimp, shelled
Oh my! I make pancit all the time. This rendition is one that is
easy to make in the average American/Canadian kitchen. To me, this is
'outastuff cooking' if you know what I mean. It uses just a bit of
everything.
Chop up all the veggies (feel free to add more!). The cabbage is
more authentic if Bok Choy but it can be Nappa or just normal 'head
cabbage'. b The bell pepper doesnt have to be green. In fact, a
yellow or red would look better. The carrots do not have to be baby,
just chop them up small if not using whole baby carrots.
Cant find Pancit seasoning? Its a mix of garlic salt, black pepper,
a bit of a mild chile powder, and soy sauce. Take about 1/3 cup soy
sauce and add about 1 teaspoon of the other spices each, and you will
be close enough. When I make my own, I add some oyster sauce but that
isnt essential.
The noodles are those hard dry brown thickish looking ones as
opposed to the thin white ones that look like (and are sometimes
labeled as) 'angel hair' or 'glass noodles'. These are the more
substantial ones. The recipe will not work right with the glass type
as they do not absorb enough water.
A side note, the noodle pack will tell you to soak them first. Do
not bother with this version.
Put all but the noodles into a pan that is low and wide and flat. A
big cast iron skillet will do. This is a big recipe so cut down the
size to fit the pan if you have only a little 9 inch skillet with a 2
inch high rim.
Set this to boil for about 5 mins, then add the dry noodles and turn
the heat off. About 5 mins later, stir it then add 1-2 TB oil if
desired.
Optional additions: Pancit is like soup. Anything can go in there!

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
