The Fidonews at a Glance
In the editorial this week, I ask the question "Politics in Fidonews?"
for certain reasons...
... such as this week's guest editorial from Ward Dossche, "The
Mother of all Wars is not to be", about the political situation that
we probably are all too familiar with now.
Also from the keyboard of Ward comes "FTSC-Chair election", another
political subject one might say, albeit in a much smaller scale.
In yet another wonderful ASCII comix, Frank Vest shows us how he
thinks Ol' Fido should handle internet, symbolized by a mouse cursor,
this in "Obsolete".
Finally, still in the politics spirit, a kiddy joke, "False Alarm",
about what can happen if grown-ups take kids too seriously.

Politics in Fidonews?
As you can see, we have something of a political touch in this issue.
So, are we going to allow that in the future too?
I know some will object to this, but after all, doesn't politics
concern us all, and even can have impact on Fidonet? Of course this
editor does not believe it will benefit the Snooze to make it an all
political medium, but some may very well have it's given place here.
Remember all, that, unlike with a commercial magazine, the editor
of this ezine does not have the luxury to chose between so many
contributions, he can actually listen to what the readers want in it,
it's entirely up to the article writers to decide what the Snooze will
look like.
Ergo, no demands or requests, only article contributions will give
the Fidonews it's direction.

GUEST EDITORIAL
=================================================================
The Mother of all Wars is not to be
by Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
Two leading medical publications, "The Lancet" and the "British
Medical Journal", are drawing an urgent attention to support
resistance against a military intervention in Iraq. Both magazines
published an open letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair in which
professors, faculty staff and students of the London School of Hygiene
argue against a war and in favour of peace, for ethical international
government and a just global development.
The arguments in the different texts cite three recent reports. First
is an internal UN Report, a report of Medact and one of the WHO (World
Health Organisation).
These publications show that as a consequence of the 1991 Gulf War and
the ongoing embargo against Iraq more than a million people have
perished. A new war could lead to an immediate 250.000 more
casualties, mainly civilians. That number will increase if ever
tactical nuclear arms enter the theater of operations.
The expected massive flood of refugees will be faced with abominable
dangers of hunger and epidemics which could add 200.000 more to the
death toll. There will be long-term effects on the health and
development, both physical and psychological, of nearly all children
in the area. There will be a need to take immediate care of more than
3 million civilians and there will be health problems for at least
500.000.
At the same time an armed conflict will largely destroy Iranian
healthcare, extreme lack of medical and pharmaceutical supplies will
be caused and render the effective treatment of healthproblems an
improbability.
According to the above cited UN-report, the humanitarian action which
is already now being planned will be cynically late and insufficient.
The actual reconstruction of the healthcare system will take years.
Adequate international relief, even when financed by all confiscated
oil-revenues, will be problematic.
The WHO-report points out the terrible global consequences of war.
This kind of violence during the last decade alone has led to an
increase in global poverty and extreme unhealthy living-conditions.
A war against Iraq, who could be the first one of a series of armed
conflicts, will lead to an accelerated continuation of this trend. The
financial repercussions of a military adventure will weigh heavily on
the world-household and will be a reason to further reduce social
expenditures, also in western countries. High defense-costs will be
the excuse for new and drastic cuts in healthcare and social security,
people not marching on the same tune will be unpatriotic and become
outcasts.
FIDONEWS 20-07 Page 4 17 Feb 2003
Healthcare workers also have a preventive task, certainly when the
threat of war is imminent. A military intervention in Iraq will harm
its population seriously, massively and fundamentally. It will destroy
the local healthcare system and indirectly influence health on a
global level.
For the sake of the ordinary people of Iraq in particular and all
human beings globally people ought to oppose this war, and all other
wars with it. We need to call upon the governments of the world to
ensure that "the mother of all wars" will never be.

FTSC-Chair election to take a start
By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
I have been invited to administer the election of a new FTSC-chair.
This election will start on February 17th 2003.
The procedure for this election has been described in the document
FTA1001 which you can retrieve on the internet via:
http://ftsc.org/~yeppe/docs/fetch.php?doc=fta1001
and will be adhered to.
It means that candidates are needed. I quote from FTA1001:
************************* QUOTE *************************
To be eligible for appointment, an individual must be a Fidonet
node, be actively involved in Fidonet, though not necessarily in a
programming context, and should have proven organizational skills. A
candidate need not be a member of the FTSC. It is recommended that a
successful candidate not carry any *C or *EC responsibilities during
the term of office.
A candidate for FTSC Administrator may be nominated by any Standing
Member.
************************ UNQUOTE ************************
One candidacy so far has been received, Scott Little. To formally
allow everybody to exercise his/her rights to become a candidate there
will be a further nomination-period ending Monday morning Feb.24th at
00h01am "my time".
Nominations will be announced in FTSC_PUBLIC, Fidonews and other
available means on Feb.24th 2003 at 00h001am.
On Feb.24 2003 at 00h01 the election will start and run for 14 days
until March 10th 00h01am. I quote again from FTA1001:
************************* QUOTE *************************
The FTSC Administrator is appointed on the basis of a vote by all
Standing Members who are defined by the then-current edition of
FTA-1003 (FTSC Membership List). A successful candidate must receive
approval by at least a plurality of votes.
Publication of the nominations and the voting procedure shall take
place openly in the FTSC_PUBLIC echo, and voting shall close three
weeks after publication of the vote. Votes shall be by netmail
ballot to an independent enumerator.
************************ UNQUOTE ************************
I will accept votes via netmail but also via email at 'wd@skynet.be'
FIDONEWS 20-07 Page 6 17 Feb 2003
which is my personal email-address. All votes will be checked for
confirmation; unconfirmed votes will be rejected.
The outcome of the election will be announced in FTSC_PUBLIC, Fidonews
and every other useful means on March 10th 2003. There will be a
period of three weeks to enter complaints. If complaints are
formulated they will be collected by an overseer, for independent
processing, whom I will appoint prior to commencement of voting.
Appointment of the FTSC-administrator will then occur on March 30th
2003. This appointment will expire on March 30th 2007.
Take care,
\%/@rd

False Alarm
WASHINGTON (Feb. 14) - A senior government official said Friday the
administration now believes some of the information which led to
upgrading the nation's terror threat level last week to orange, or
high, was likely fabricated.
Authorities drew that conclusion based on wiretaps of terrorist
suspects Alan and Jimmy, both second graders at Madison Elementary
School in northern New Jersey.
The chain of events began when Alan mentioned to Jimmy that "we should
dig a fort in the woods and fill it up with bazookas and hand
bernades." Department of Homeland Security officials immediately
obtained a court order permitting the wiretap and presented the
following transcript to President Bush:
ALAN: And no girls allowed.
JIMMY: Except Suzy.
ALAN: AWWW haw. Bet you're in LOVE with Suzy!
JIMMY: I am NOT!
ALAN: SUZEE AND JIMMEE SITTING IN A TREE! KAY EYE ESS ESS EYE
EN...[Connection terminated]
"It was sort of a disappointing transcript," admitted a senior DHS
spokesman, adding, "Better safe than sorry."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
