The Fidonews at a Glance
The FTSC situation is an ongoing event, this week we have an article
from Göran Eriksson, "FTSC Nominations, second attempt", with some
novel ideas on how to make the committee work better in the future.
In our travel report from Oz, we have a more eventful day than the
last one, from day eight of the "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U".
More on the FTSC in Frank Vest's "Rebuttal to 'The Future of
Fidonet Standards'" in our special rebuttal column.
The international kitchen once again finds it's way to Japan where
Carol prepares "Xxcarol's Japan 'Pulled Turkey'".
And then finally a joke from Warren's archives, "Physics Test".

FTSC Nominations, second attempt
by Goran Eriksson, 2:201/505, get@get.pp.se
Seeing the turns of the current election process for FTSC standing
members, I would like to repeat the following proposal that I put
forward for the first time in 1999:
When working with the preparations for the FTSC elections just
concluded, it struck me how foreign the nomination process prescribed
by FTA-1001 is to me.
In my neck of the woods, the normal thing would be for candidates in
FTSC elections to nominate themselves and present themselves and their
merits. The electorate would be trusted to make a sound choice between
the candidates based on that information and on other information
available to each member of the electorate.
Certainly, formal nomination procedures like those prescribed by
FTA-1001 are sometimes used also around here.
In other cases, the nomination procedure may formally be open, but you
don't stand any real chance if you're not recommended by the appointed
nomination committee.
In an organization like the FTSC as well as the FidoNet as a whole,
the norm would however be that anyone may nominate anyone. Even
her-/himself. Seconded nominations may occur but are not required.
I therefore suggest that FTA-1001 is changed accordingly.
You're invited to take part in the discussion about this suggestion in
the FTSC_PUBLIC echomail conference. That's where the FTSC has to seek
consensus for changes like these.

2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U
Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305
Day 8 - Sunday 11th August (Urandangie to Mt Isa)
Well. What an eventful day. Waited for the sun to rise a fair way
and for a breeze to come up, as the first few away were looking right
into the sun, and the dust was just hanging in the air - not ideal
dirt riding conditions.
After a leisurely breakfast, pack and chat, Phil Gresham discovered he
had a bit of a problem. While he was showing off his fabulous Ohlins
rear shock, we got a shock himself to see no bolt holding the rear
mount. There was part of the bolt on the other side, so it seems to
have sheared off. After a good scrounge around, he managed to get
hold of a bolt that would do the job. It wasn't quite thick enough
and was too long. A visit to the bush mechanic at Urandangie got some
metal to make a shim out of, to take up some of the slack, and a
hacksaw to shorten the bolt.
Rick, David and I decided to head off to Mt Isa, not long after
Manfred and Reggie. We had decided to stop at the 50km mark to
regroup. I was in the lead and had caught up to one 4WD and trailer
on a fairly good stretch. He let me past. I caught up to another one
in amongst the bulldust holes, and as it was around the 50km mark, I
pulled over to wait for the others. David came along shortly after.
We waited and waited for Rick. After half an hour, we thought
something must have happened, as he surely couldn't be riding that
slowly, so we turned back.
Another bike came along almost immediately, and I was ready to give
Rick a piece of my mind for making me do U-turns, when I realised it
wasn't Rick after all. The fellow said Rick had come off a long way
back and had a broken collar bone and ribs. Oh.
We kept going back to Urandangie, meeting several bikes along the way.
RTO stopped us and confirmed the reports. He said there were plenty
of people there, so he would keep going.
When we got back to Urandangie, Rick was on a mattress in the back of
the publican's F250 4WD truck in a lot of pain. Steve Otter had
ridden Rick's bike back, but it was in a bit of a bad way. Senga was
looking after Rock, along with another nurse who was also called Rick.
He was one of the other motorcyclists (I think from Melbourne) still
there. The RFDS had been called and would be out in a few hours time.
Al Geritz was also there, helping out.
The publican said he would take Rick's gear into Mt Isa tomorrow when
he usually goes in, and would also take Rick's bike into Mt Isa, some
time later. As it was now lunchtime, we had a toasted sandwich and a
Coke at the pub, said farewell to Rick and set off again.
From time to time, when the dust wasn't too bad, I checked to see if I
could see David coming. Got to about the 50km mark again, and thought
I should stop, as I couldn't see past my dust cloud. When it had
settled, there was no sign of David. I waited about a minute, then
FIDONEWS 19-46 Page 4 18 Nov 2002
found a fairly hard spot to turn around. Then back through the
bulldust holes again. I came across him 7km back just near a cattle
grid. to my immense relief, he wasn't lying in a crumpled heap on the
side of the road, as I had imagined. He hadn't come off at all, but
after thinking for quite a while that the road seemed to be much worse
than he had remembered, he finally came to the conclusion that he had
a flat front tyre.
Unfortunately, even though we had a spare front tube, we don't have
the skills or tools for changing it. David got the wheel off, I set
up our fly for some shade and we both settled down on our camping
stools to wait for someone to come along.
After a couple of hours, a 4WD eventually emerged from the heat haze,
heading towards Urandangie. We flagged them down and begged a lift
for me, the wheel, spare tube and my helmet and jacket. The idea was
that someone at Urandangie could change the tube for us, then I could
get a lift back to David, the next morning if necessary. He had some
food and water to tide him over.
However, we had only gone about 5kms when we met Al Geritz, then Steve
and Senga, who had tyre levers and expertise. My lift then took me
back to David. I expressed my gratitude for their assistance, and Al
and Steve started on the tyre. Steve I think was rather pleased to be
using his brand new Metzler tyre levers. They were pretty schmick,
but unfortunately the narrow tip snapped off when they were trying to
break the bead. Despite that setback, they managed to change the tube
and re-inflate the tyre using BMW compressed air canisters. We were
very impressed with them. Note: Replace air canisters - 3 for us and
1 for Al. We should only have used 2, but the bead didn't pop the
first time. Note: Remember to lubricate inside wheel rim with
washing up liquid before inflating tyre.
The conclusion was that it was caused by hitting a rock which had
compressed the tyre in, and pinched the tube into the rim. There was
3cm rip in the carcass and two matching tears in the tube. David said
the bike handled much better after that! So at last we managed to
complete the last part of that road. It wasn't as bad going out as it
was coming in. I was going faster (mostly 100kph), which helped. We
stopped at the seal while Al took a photo of us by the sign. It was
exactly 5 o'clock and my bike had just clocked 40,005 km since May
2000.
We all rode up the sealed road to Mt Isa, found a caravan park,
showered, then went to the town Leagues Club for an "All You Can Eat"
buffet meal. We all went a little crazy and ate way too much, which
meant we had to waddle back to the caravan park to end a most eventful
day.

Rebuttal to "The Future of Fidonet Standards"
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
Last week, Michael Grant put forth an idea for a new Fidonet Standards
Committee. Here's some thoughts on this:
MG> membership, the IFS can then deem it a Fidonet Technical Standard.
So, Fidonet replaces the FTSC with the IFS and things go on...
The last thing Fidonet needs is another "committee" to deal with. We
have widely used software, protocols and such. What we need is the
FTSC to document these.
Another thing that is overlooked in this article is "backward
compatibility". The Internet doesn't worry much about being "backward
compatible". Their motto seems to be "Run the latest and greatest".
This is noted when one "surfs" to a web page that locks your system
because of some "new standard" that hasn't become a "standard" yet....
but one software implements it and to heck with the rest if they have
problems with it. This is also noted in the ever increasing of program
size. If Fidonet follows the Internet /AND/ tries to remain backwards
compatible to any degree, the "latest and greatest" Fidonet mailer
will soon be 50 megs, if there is a "latest and greatest". It has been
pointed out that creating software requires a motive. To create new
software that is up to new standards while keeping old standards
intact will require larger and larger programs. To get a software
developer to do this for free is not going to be easy.
By putting a "new" committee in place, Fidonet also has the problem
of getting this "new IFS" recognized. As has been demonstrated may
time in Fidonet, that will not be easy, if it is do'able at all.
No, people. Fidonet needs to get what it already has in place to
function first. A new committee, or anything else, will come
afterwards.

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN

Xxcarol's Japan 'Pulled Turkey'
Yield: 3 Servings
3 ea Turkey legs (3/4 lb each)
1/2 c Hot barbacue sauce
1/4 c Mirin (sweet rice wine)
3 tb Oyster sauce
1 tb Dried onion flakes
1/2 tb Mequite Seasoning Salt mix
OHH My Cho (Japanese apartment) smells good today! What's cooking
is an adaption of several recipes from my meal-master database,
uniquely shifted like I always do, to something 'new'. As I live in
Sasebo Japan, this one shifted to things I can easily get locally so
have on hand just now.
This one will be a winner for a crockpot if yours will fit the legs
in. Mine is too small and I couldnt get the bone to break (I have a
bad wrist just now) so have it on the stove.
Wash the turkey legs off, then in a pot that will fit them, add the
rest above and the turkey legs. Set on low (crockpot or stove) and
let cook until almost done. For a crockpot, this will be 5 hours.
Stove will be 2 hours. When the meat falls off the bones as you turn
it, start removing the bones then shred the rest.
This will come out very close to a southern favorite called 'pulled
BBQ Pork' but is of a lowfat turkey meat that also costs less!
Serve on rolls or cornbread with gravey and coleslaw at the side.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

Physics Test
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
Some kids just have more on the ball than others!
The following is an actual question given on a University of
Washington Physics mid term exam. One answer was so "profound" that
the Professor shared it with his colleagues, which is why we now have
the pleasure of enjoying it as well.
Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic
(absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs
using Boyle's Law, (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it
is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following: "First, we need to know how
the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate that
souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think
that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not
leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions
state that if you are not member of their religion, you will go to
Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since
people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that
all souls go to Hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of
souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of
change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order
for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume
of Hell has to expand as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase
until all Hell breaks loose.
2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase
of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until
Hell freezes over.
So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Theresa
Banyan during my Freshman year, that ' it will be a cold day in Hell
before I sleep with you', and take into account the fact that I still
have not succeeded with her, then, #2 cannot be true and thus I am
sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze."
This student received the only A.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
