FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It injured your national pride. I see that we all need to learn to
lose that national identity when posting here, we are world citizens
and as such should be developing a global pride.

The Fidonews at a Glance
In the editorial this week, I tell you about a new column, that I call
"Best of Fidonet".
Warren Bonner explains "Why we forward jokes to our friends....",
or rather some thoughts about how important it is to stick to our
friends and why.
Frank Vest talks about "School Daze" in his column. About how the
staff and the students look differently on the first and the last day
at school.
Carol teaches us how to make "Leeky Scallops" in our international
kitchen.
The jokes section is all Irish. First two "Irish Jokes" from
Warren's neverending supply of jokes, then something snipped from the
HOLYSMOKE echo, about "Irish lass comes home".
Finally we have a change in the software listing, with a new list-
keeper, Ben Ritchey from now on taking care of the list "FIDONet
Software References". I guess some will say it's about time that some-
thing finally happened with this list...

EDITORIAL
=================================================================
Best of Fidonet
It's been a while since last you saw an editorial here. I can only
blame the wonderful summer for this, and hope to make up for it in the
coming editions of the Snooze.
First out is a little novelty. I've decided to make the old classic
quotations, that's normally making up the Food for Thoughts column,
give way for some that are collected from various fidonet echoes. I
hope you will enjoy this novelty, if not send a letter to the editor
and give your reasons for not doing so.
In line with this, I've opened up a new column, that I've named
Best of Fidonet. We've had an echo with that name here in R20 (Sweden)
for many years, and the thought behind it is, that noone can possibly
read all the postings in all the echoes of fidonet, and therefore are
likely to miss some of the really good pieces that sometimes occur.
In this R20 BOF echo, all the readers were urged to save the best
writings they stumbled across in their favorite echoes, and forward it
into this single echo, thereby making it less probable that the best
parts of fidonet were missed.
So, whenever you see some really good posting anywhere, please have
the Snooze in mind, and forward it to this new BOF column. But
remember, it must be good enough for you to consider tattooing it on
your back (as the rules for the Swedish echo stated). If the goodies
are just a short sentence, maybe snipped from a larger posting, you
could try sending it in as a Food for Thoughts contribution.

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Why we forward jokes to our friends....
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the
scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He
remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead
for years.
He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came
to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like
fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch
that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch
that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate
looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a
man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out,
"Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought
right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the
traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and
continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long
walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road
which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been
closed.
There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside,
leaning against a tree and reading a book. "Excuse me!" he called to
the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there." The man pointed to a place
that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and
FIDONEWS 19-34 Page 5 26 Aug 2002
sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside
it.
The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he
gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back
toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked. "This is Heaven,"
was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing", the traveler said, "The man down the road
said that was Heaven, too!"
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope.
That's Hell."
"Well, Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?",
the traveler asked.
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they
screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."
Soooo...
Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without
writing a word, maybe this could explain: When you are very busy, but
still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward jokes.
When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you
forward jokes.
When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know
how, you forward jokes.
And to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still
important, you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what
you get?
A forwarded joke!
So my friend, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've
been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of
today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send
you a smile...

FRANK'S COLUMN - FRANK VEST
=================================================================
School Daze
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
I'm not sure how other countries' school systems work, so I'll just
go with American schools. :) As a former employee of a school system
and a high school graduate, I've seen both sides. :)
Many of you have kids, or grand kids, that will be starting school.
Some have already started. Many of you may be employees of a school
system (did you ever leave?). For the rest of you, just remember your
school days. :)
There are two days of school that are significant, for opposite
reasons, depending on who your are. Let's look at them:
:The first day of school
For the staff;
This day is the worst. It doesn't matter if you are a teacher,
principal, janitor or what. You've been at work for at least two
weeks. You've had meetings constantly (sometimes with people you
couldn't stand last year either). Nothing is ready. The schedules are
not right. The classrooms are not ready and no one knows what the heck
is going on.
For the students;
This is a great day. None of the bells are working right. No one
knows what class you are supposed to be in either. You can be late for
class... if you show up at all.. and no one know the difference.
You're getting to meet all of your friends again and none of the
school staff has any idea of what /YOU/ are planning for /THEM/ this
year.
:The last day of school
For the students;
This day is the best (even better if you're graduating from high
school). No more teachers loading you with enough homework to last the
rest of your life while expecting it turned in the next day. YOU'RE
FREE!!! :-)
For the staff;
While not as bad as the first day of school, this is still not a
"walk in the park". Probably the best part is that you are free from
those kids for the summer. Of course, you still have a few days to go.
You're looking around the classroom, or school building and realizing
that although all the books, desks and other stuff was supposed to be
FIDONEWS 19-34 Page 7 26 Aug 2002
checked in, cleaned and ready for storage, nothing is done. The
paperwork on your desk is still piled up and the grades from the final
exams have not been entered into the books.... AND... now you have to
figure out what you will do for a summer job to replace the salary you
will lose in a few days. Them kids think getting a summer job is hard,
they should be "our" age. :)

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Leeky Scallops
Yield: 4 Servings
4 tb Butter, room temp
1 tb Fresh thyme or 1.5 dry
2 ea Leeks, chopped julianne
2 ea Carrots, chopped julianne
1 lb Bay scallops
3 tb Fresh basil
1 ea Lemon chopped to quarters
Mash chopped thyme, with salt and pepper to taste, into the butter.
Now blanch the leeks and carrots and set aside. Lay equal amounts of
leeks and carrots on 4 foil linings and add scallops. Add lemon juice
and the butter evenly about the 4 sets. You can bake these in a
preheated oven at 450 degrees for 15 mins, or grill the foil packages.
Goes lovely with grilled whole corn, still in the husk and some
baking soda type breads of cheese and herb type. For dessert,
consider slices of fresh grapefruit.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

Father O'Regis
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
Father O'Regis rose from his bed. It was a fine spring day and he
walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the
beautiful day outside.
He then noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his
front lawn. He promptly called the local police station.
The conversation went like this: "Top o' the day to ye. This is
Sgt.Flaherty. How might I help ye?"
"And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O'Malley at St.
Anthony's. There's a jackass lying dead in me front lawn. Would ye
be so kind as to send a couple o' yer lads to take care of the
matter?"
Sgt. Flaherty, considering himself to be quite a wit, replied with a
smirk, "Well now father, it was always my impression that you people
took care of last rites!"
There was dead silence on the line for a long moment.
Father O'Malley then replied: "Aye, that's certainly true, but we are
also obliged to notify the next of kin."

BLESS THE IRISH
Mrs. O'Donovan was walking down O'Connell Street in Dublin, and
coming in the opposite direction was Father O'Rafferty.
"Hello," said the Father, "and how is Mrs. O'Donovan? Didn't I marry
you and Bill O'Donovan two years ago?"
She replied "Aye, that you did, Father."
"And be there any little ones yet?"
"No, not yet, Father," said she.
"Well, I'm going to Rome next week, and I'll light a candle for you."
"Oh, thank you, Father." And away she went.
Some years later they met again. "Well, Mrs. O'Donovan," said the
priest, "how are you?"
FIDONEWS 19-34 Page 10 26 Aug 2002
"Oh, very well," said she.
"And tell me," he said, "have you any little ones yet?"
"Oh yes, Father. I've had three sets of twins, and four singles - ten
children in all."
"Now isn't that wonderful," he said. "And how is your lovely husband?"
"Oh," she said, "E's gone to Rome to blow out yer damn candle."

Irish lass comes home
(snipped from HOLYSMOKE, posted by Mimi Gallandt)
An Irish girl went to London to work as a secretary and began
sending home money and gifts to her parents. After a few years they
asked her to come home for a visit, as her father was getting frail
and elderly. She pulled up to the family home in a Rolls Royce and
stepped out wearing fur and diamonds.
As she walked into the house her father said "seem to be paying
secretaries awfully well in London."
The girl took his hands and said "Dad - I've been meaning to tell
you something for years but I didn't want to put it in a letter. I
can't hide it from you any longer. I've become a prostitute."
Her father gasped, put his hand on his heart and keeled over. The
doctor was called but the old man had clearly lost the will to live.
He was put to bed and the priest was called.
As the priest began to administer Extreme Unction, with the mother
and daughter weeping and wailing, the old man muttered weakly, "I'm a
goner -- killed by my own daughter! Killed by the shame of what you've
become!"
"Please forgive me!" his daughter sobbed, "I only wanted to have
nice things! I wanted to be able to send you money and the only way I
could do it was by becoming a prostitute."
Brushing the priest aside, the old man sat bolt upright in bed,
smiling. "Did you say prostitute? That was a close one - I thought you
said Protestant"

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
