There is something inherently wrong with a society that creates laws
to protect the people, then hires lawyers to determine the best way to
bypass those laws.

The Fidonews at a Glance
Still it's rather calm at the editor's office. I hope it's just
because it's still summer, and that the issues will be a little
thicker later on. Frank Vest sent in an article, that he thought would
give him lot's of flames and arguments, it's called "Are There Still
Programmers in Fidonet??" Let's hope he will get his fair share of
what he expects. :)
Then we have a beautiful (well, maybe not if you think of the story
it tells, but from a graph point of view) picture of the developement
of fidonet over the years, "Fidonet 1985..2002". It's been compiled by
Renato Zambon from Brazil; it's sure nice to see some submissions from
other parts of the world than the usual.
From another part of the world, zone 3, we have a small notice
about a "Zone 3 Region merger".
Carol makes "Shrimply Fiesta Feta". Those of you, that haven't
tried feta cheese yet, are highly encouraged to do so. It's great in
almost any salad, just remember not to take to much of it since it has
a rather sharp flavour that can easily overtake the rest of the salad.
Finally a joke from Warren Bonner. For some strange reason he's
called it "Snail Mail". I must admit I cannot figure out why. The more
appropriate The Fart could of course seem a little unclean so to
speak, maybe that's why...

Are There Still Programmers in Fidonet??
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
The actual question should be: "Are there still any programmers in
Fidonet that are willing to work for the hobby instead of the money
and are good enough to do what I'm about to propose?"
For the following, I'm thinking about Windows 9x as the OS.
The Fidonet BBS, in the days of dial-up, had a "front end mailer"
that answered the phone and either gathered the mail or loaded a BBS
program dependant on if the call was another mailer or a human user.
As time moved on and the Internet came to the front, Fidonet slowly
moved to that front. The move, in my humble opinion, wasn't well
done.. and is still not done. There is something missing here.
Fidonet has divided itself into "legacy" and IP divisions. The binkp
protocol was developed as well as FTP and other mail transfers via the
Internet. A Fidonet Node could dial into his/her ISP and transfer mail
via the Internet. Note that I said "dial into his/her ISP". A user can
still dial into an ISP.
So, what is missing in Fidonet?? The answer is; A mailer than
incorporates dial-up with IP.
The Fidonet mailer I'm proposing would have the ability to accept
binkp, telnet, FTP and other methods of IP mail. It would also have
the ability to accept dial-up mail calls like the "legacy" mailers do.
PLUS!
This new Fidonet mailer will be able to accept dial-up human callers
and TELNET out to an IP address. Why, you ask?? Let me drag an example
in here;
A simple two node Fidonet BBS. One line is dial-up and the other
telnet. Now... For the telnet side, the computer has to run a telnet
BBS program and a IP mailer of some kind. For the dial-up side, the
computer has to run a dial-up mailer that will load a dial-up BBS
program. What do we have here??
A telnet BBS program
An IP mailer program
A dial-up mailer program
Three programs on one computer at the minimum. Most likely, the
dial-up mailer will be a Dos (legacy) program. Of course, you can
argue that there are IP/dial-up mailers like Argus. Nothing against
Argus, but let us look at this;
FIDONEWS 19-32 Page 4 12 Aug 2002
A telnet BBS program.
An IP/Dial-up mailer.
Looks good, doesn't it?? But wait, the IP/Dial-up mailer has to load
a BBS program when a human caller connects via dial-up. In Windows,
this would mean starting the BBS program in a separate window. We're
right back to three programs minimum.
How about making a dial-up BBS into a telnet BBS using some kind of
"modem emulation"? Ok... Let us see;
A dial-up mailer
A "modem emulator"
A dial-up BBS program that inits the "modem emulator"
An IP mailer
Oops... we went from three programs to four. I hope you can see what
I'm talking about. Adding more nodes only adds to the problem and
load.
What I envision is two programs. A mailer that will accept dial-up
human connections and then telnet out to a telnet BBS program. A
telnet BBS program that sits and waits for a connection via telnet...
either from the Internet or the mailer. This eliminates the (probably
Dos) dial-up BBS and the need for a separate IP mailer. We have the
telnet BBS programs. Where is the mailer?
This would have an added advantage if the Sysop running this mailer
had a LAN (Local Are Network) in his/her house. The telnet BBS could
be on one computer while the mailer is on another computer. One
program running on each computer instead of two programs running on
one computer.
Now, the questions, and challenges, if you will, are....
Are there any programmers in Fidonet that can or will write such a
mailer??
Would you do it for free... or at least at a "hobby' cost??
Can this be done??
BTW, Before I get a lot of people telling me how dial-up is dead and
all that, let me say this;
ISPs still offer dial-up connections to the Internet.
As a further thought. I think Fidonet, at least in Zone 1, is moving
away from dial-up because it's just to much of a hassle to set up a
dial-up mailer/BBS, a telnet BBS and a IP mailer program just to offer
both worlds.
As a "logic" to this, if ISPs still offer dial-up access, then the
argument that modems are gone, obsolete and such, isn't correct.
Oh yeah, while you're at it, tell my 15 dial-up users that dial-up is
FIDONEWS 19-32 Page 5 12 Aug 2002
dead and see what you get. :-))
With hope,
Frank

Hi All, after collecting old nodelists (glad to the others anonymous

sample of one exemplar per year since 1984, this table and graph were

Nice graph? As many of you know, things didn't evolve the same way in
FIDONEWS 19-32 Page 7 12 Aug 2002
all zones and regions. In the average apex of 1996 for example Z1 was
already in decline while Z2 segment in nodelist was still growing.
Also nodes quantitity doesn't have direct relation with real network
activity, integration, reliability or other aspects we can imagine.
Analyse better the data or just think about it is left as exercise to
the reader and, who knows, a future article.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

Snail Mail
By Warren Bonner
wdbonner@pacbell.net
President Bush alighted from Air Force One and strolled down a 300
hundred foot, plush red carpet where, at the end, he was greeted with
a warm hand shake by the queen of England.
The two entered an elegant coach drawn by a team of eight matched
horses. As the president and the queen waved to huge crowd the horse
nearest the coach let out one gigantic windy!
Suddenly the president, the queen, the entourage and the entire crowd
became silent. After several minutes of this silence, the queen,
deciding that somebody had to say something turned to the president
and said, "Please accept my regrets, Mr. president. It seems that
there are some things that even the queen has no control."
"Think nothing of it, Madam, Bush said, If you hadn't said anything I
would have sworn it was one the horses."

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
