The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the
right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting
moment.

The Fidonews at a Glance
Here's yet another thin issue of the Snooze. The only submission is
number six in the "Confessions of an Ex-Sysop" series by Steve
Townsley. Starting with some thoughts around the Microsoft anti-trust
trial and then moves on to thoughts about what Fidonet could have
looked like if developed today. At the end there is a stray line, that
I really didn't know what to do about, so I just let it be.
A joke about what can happen at the butcher's shop, "Chicken sale"
from the archives, and that's it for this week I'm afraid.

GENERAL ARTICLES

Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (6)
Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org
Like many computer users the events of the last four years in the case
brought by the Department of Justice against Microsoft has piqued my
interest. According to the courts we now know, if we didn't already,
that Microsoft have broken US anti-trust laws and have set themselves
up as a monopoly. In Britain a monopoly is considered to exist when
around 30% of a market is dominated by one company. By any realistic
appraisal of the PC software market Microsoft is a monopoly.
All that remains now is the remedy imposed by the court.
Of course the original environment in which the case started - the
browser wars of the mid-1990s is over. Netscape is now owned by AOL
after being forced out of business my Microsoft when it "discovered"
the Internet in the Autumn of 1995 and reversed course over a previous
plan to create a premium cost online service to rival CompuServe and
AOL. The process of US law does invite the question of whether it (US
law) is fast enough to cope with the developments in the software
world. Almost no remedy can repay the loss of Netscape as a viable
business and perhaps the other start-up businesses that might have
offered browsers had Microsoft not shipped a free browser with every
operating system it sold.
It was all very different when Fido was being developed. FidoNet is
almost a Microsoft monopoly. The vast majority of Fido compatible
systems run on a Microsoft operating system or a legacy system devised
by Microsoft. A contributing factor to Microsoft's success was the
fact that tens of thousands of BBS' could run reliably 24 hours a day
and 365 days a year. Of course developers saw themselves as using the
cheapest and most available platform. To some extent it was even
subversive to choose DOS. The alternatives of CPM, Unix etc were all
horribly expensive.
FidoNet in the 1980s was on the cutting edge. Developing
communications drivers for the very latest modems. The first
configuration for a Hayes V-Series and USR Courier HST was among the
FidoNet community.
However Fido shares something of US legal system. It has failed to
keep up with innovation. Users no longer call BBS' via telephone lines
they use the 'net. Web sites rather than BBS' are the way in which
users can receive information. Worse still most Fido systems still
seem to be run on DOS. Looking into the nodelist is like looking into
a timewarp. The FidoNet pioneers burnt out and became disillusioned
with the politics of FidoNet. Many of them felt that far from co-
operation there were too many flame wars. Too many co- ordinators
valued their own ego instead of developing FidoNet.
What would FidoNet be today if it were invented this year rather than
in 1984/5. I suspect it would be programmed using today's subversive
FIDONEWS 19-25 Page 4 24 Jun 2002
operating system - Linux. I would also suspect that it would provide a
native webserver, built in secure messaging with anti-spam facilities
and encrypted messages. There would be no "nodelist" but rather some
kind of built-in DNS. It would have a the option of dial-up but the
main focus would be maximising the use of DSL and 24 availablity.
Echomail would also support strong anti-spam features.
FidoNet is going to have to grow up or fade away. Fade away because
ultimately modem connection will disappear from all but the remotest
part of the western world and most people will use the Internet for
their online experience.
However this isn't going to happen because like, Netscape

Chicken sale
A woman goes to the butcher shop to buy a chicken for the Sunday meal.
The butcher has only one scrawny chicken left. He puts it on the
scale.
- Three pounds, he says.
- That's too scrawny; don't you have something bigger, she asks.
He pretends to rummage around, and then puts the same chicken back on
the scale, while pressing with his thumb.
- Three and a half pounds, he says.
- That looks better, I'll take them both.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file
extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File

From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
