The Fidonews at a Glance
In the editorial this week, some ranting about "Football and other
sports", this of course because there's a World Championship of the
world's most poular sport, going on. This said as information to those
who have managed to miss that.
Then we have come to number three in the "Confessions of an
Ex-Sysop" series by Steve Townsley. This productive writer also has
number four and five in his series pending, so we can look forward to
more exciting reading the next couple of issues. Unfortunatly Petko
Bossakov didn't make it with his next part, we hope you will find the
time for this for next week's issue, Petko.
And noone else made it either, so that leaves us with only a couple
of jokes. "Some facts?" about those strange instructions you can find
on some US products (I guess it has something to do with manufacturers
trying to avoid all those law suits, that the Americans seem so happy
about) by Warren Bonner. And then there's "How's life?", by Ward
Dossche.

Football and other sports
Jeezzz it's getting late. I had planned a long and inspired editorial
this week, to try to make up for the lack of such the last issues, but
running short of time as I am, I guess it'll be a shorty after all.
I didn't plan on spending so much time watching the Football World
Championship as I've been doing the last couple of days. Especially
with all the things that need to be fixed on the house, now that we've
got perfect weather for it here in Göteborg, Sweden, after all the
rain that's been pouring down for several weeks.
Football, by the way, that's the real thing I'm talking about, not
that strange version of rugby, that the Americans call football. Can't
understand why, since most of the time the players seem to be running
around with the ball in their hands.
I never did understand how this sport can be so popular in the USA.
Maybe it's partly because it's rather violent, and partly because
women and other persons, that enjoy watching well built men running
around in tights, get their fair share of eye candy.
Can it be the "tight reason" that makes another extremely boring
sport, baseball, so popular? Here in Sweden baseball is a typical
girly sport, that the girls use to play when the boys are playing
football. Incidently, another typical girly sport here in Sweden is
basketball, that's what our girls play when the boys are playing
icehockey.
After the huge success for the Football World Championship in 1994,
when it was played in the USA, the general hope was that the Americans
would get started playing this, the most popular sport in the world,
but that didn't seem to happen. The US team has qualified for this
year's WC, but most of the players seem to be the same old guys that
did so well in 1994, I think they will have a hard time repeating
their triumph from eight years ago.
On the other hand, Sweden, that ended on third place in 1994, most
likely will not be able to repeat *their* triumph either. I'd be
surprised if we even make it to the second round. Argentina and
England will probably be to hard to beat to that round, even if we
managed to get 1-1 against England in the first game.

GENERAL ARTICLES

Confessions of an Ex-Sysop (3)
Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org
I was really delighted to see my contribution in FidoNews this week.
Delighted because it was genuinely hard work. The writing came pretty
easily it was the technical requirements that really stumped me.
The current editor might correct me here but the basic requirements
are exactly the same as when Thom Henderson, the second FidoNews
editor, told us to write in plain ascii and keep to 70 columns. Being
a European I always thought it was somewhat ironic that a worldwide
communications network set it's newsletter in ASCII - the AMERICAN
Standard Code...
In the 21st Century I had expected something more revolutionary from
FidoNews. I thought that by now you guys would have been using html,
rtf or even pdf to transmit multi-lingual and multi-fonted editions.
Instead Thom's old document is still dutifully doing the rounds with
the odd amendment. I don't know but I guess the editor still runs
Thom's MakeNews program that was invented to automate building
FidoNews in the mid-1980s.
Another unexpected feature of FidoNews is the lack of technical
articles. When I ran my BBS hardly an issue went by without a modem
review or one of FidoNet's many developers making a technical
contribution to the network. Today the largest single section is
humour (or humor) for those of you who feel American ASCII ought to
include American spelling.
When I was a Sysop I used to grab FidoNews from Fido UK1 (Rod
Smallwood) in the NMH and have my dot matrix printer hammer it out
into a pile of neatly printed pages for me to read the next morning
when I woke. As a totally useless fact Rod was unusual in that he ran
Fido on a Dec Rainbow PC and had imported a US Robotics 1200 baud
modem just to run the US mail hour so Britain could get Fido mail.
Size isn't everything guys but the last time I wrote for FidoNews it
was so full each week my article had to wait for 6 weeks to get
published. However that was 1980s and things seem to have changed.
Back to my writing problem. When I read the current technical
requirements I could not remember if MS Word could produce an exact 70
column ASCII file. So I scuttled off to my disk box and discovered
that my registered copy of PC-Write had come on 720Kb floppy disks.
It's a pretty well written program because it didn't mis-calculate the
6gb I have free on my hard drive and it installed. I was expecting the
DOS installer to throw up it's hands if it got disk free space of more
that 500mb.
So for those who want to contribute your old copy of PC-Write still
works in the 21st century the same as it did 12 years ago. Although
perhaps this is a metaphor for FidoNet - it's written standards
FIDONEWS 19-22 Page 5 3 Jun 2002
pre-date the communications revolution of the Internet so why should
it's journal be any more modern.

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

Some FACTS ?
Submitted by wdbonner@ pacbell.net
Some products have instructions you wont believe! Are we really so
stupid, and if so, do we have sense enough to understand them?
Sears hairdryer, "Do not use while sleeping."
On Bag of Fritos, "You could be a winner, no purchase necessary,
details inside."
Dial soap, "Use like regular soap."
Swanson frozen dinners, "Serving suggestions, Defrost."
Tesco's Tiramisu dessert, (printed on bottom)., "Do not turn upside
down."
Marks & Spencer Pudding, "Product will be hot after heating."
On package of a RowentaIron, "Do not iron clothes on body."
On Boots Children Cough Medicine, "Do not drive car or operate any
machinery after taking this Medication."
There are many more mindless warnings or instructions on lots of
products. Read each one you purchase, you will be surprised!

HOW'S LIFE?
By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
I was driving the highway the other day, minding my own business, when
I suddenly had this bowel-sensation indicating I had to go
potty-potty.
So I pull-off the road at the next gas-station and head towards the
rest rooms to find a nice facility with three toilets next to
eachother, all 3 equipped with all necessities to offer privacy.
One of them was in the process of being used so I enter anotherone and
take my seat.
Suddenly, I was barely sitting down, I hear a voice coming from the
other toilet ... "How are you doing?"
I must admit I was taken a bit by surprise at being addressed by a
FIDONEWS 19-22 Page 7 3 Jun 2002
total stranger at that moment in that way but finally in a shy voice I
answer: "Ehhrrr ... I'm alright".
And the other guy continues: "What kind of nice thing are you now
doing to yourself overthere?"
What kind of a question is that under those circumstances .... It's a
bit bizar but I reply: "Well, I'm a bit like you I guess ... doing the
big thing".
The other guy continues: "And are you then phantasizing about what I
might be doing to myself here right now?"
Duh! Where is this taking us? I react ... "Not really... I do this
everyday you know. How 'bout yourself?"
Suddenly the guy quite annoyed is heard saying: "Listen, I'll call you
back later. There's an idiot next door answering all my questions".

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net
Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art

Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx
Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe
Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth
Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
