The Fidonews at a Glance
In the General articles section this week we can read about "The
American Phone System", in an article by Frank Vest. Then there's
"Confessions of an Ex-Sysop", a two part article by former UK sysop
Steve Townsley. Part two will appear in the next issue.
For our section Humour in a fido vein, Frank has written a piece
called "You think Fidonet is slow?". But, hey Frank, I think it was a
bug, and not that internet really can be that slow.
In the jokes section, as usual we have one from Warren Bonner, "The
Old Codger". Something to give us an insight into the life in the US
country side perhaps? And then Ward Dossche sent in a joke, that he
forgot to put a label to, so I called it "Star-cee's dilemma".
Unfortunatly all the *C combinations seem to have been scrambled from
Ward's IC system to this editors NC ditto, I hope I got all characters
on it's right places.

GENERAL ARTICLES
=================================================================
Confessions of an Ex-Sysop
Steve Townsley stownsley@g7spn.org
I am an ex-Sysop. I am not proud of saying this - it's just a fact. I
ran several FidoNet compatible BBS's from April 1985 until about
February 1996. I am still associated with 2:256/97 in the sense that a
mate still keeps it running. As I look through the nodelist it's
pretty clear that ex-Sysops now outnumber those running FidoNet nodes.
In my case the crunch came when British co-ordinators decided they
knew best about which network sysops could join. Instead of allowing
me to stay in the network I wanted they move me. I then switched off
the BBS never to turn it on again. Co-ordinators had become more
important than the rights of the individual Sysop.
I am choosing to write a few words in FidoNews because I occasionally
like to come back and read FidoNews and inceasingly no-one seems to be
debating the purpose of Fidonet in the age of the Internet.
These days I never dial a BBS. I can't in fact because my PC is now on
a little home network and it has a DSL router connected to it.
Meanwhile my $50.00 57kb modem gathers dust on a shelf. I would guess
many a former Sysop is in the same situation. A wealth of information
is on the Internet - far more than was ever on FidoNet.
Back in 1985 the reason for being on FidoNet was because I was locked
out of email by big online services charging a fortune and no access
whatsoever to military networks like the Internet. The magic of
regular email reliably delivered point-to-point by FidoNet was both
revolutionary and affordable.
Today the story is quite different. For less than my old FidoNet phone
bill I can connect to the Internet and have reliable email in minutes
worldwide. Frankly the technical reason for FidoNet and the cost
reason reason for FidoNet has disappeared. It largely explains why the
only parts of the world have Fido expanding are places like Russia and
Africa where the telephone network remains a viable connection media.
Here in the western world your cheapest call is not to your local BBS
but actually to your ISP.
FidoNet exists in the USA and UK primarily as a leftover of past
innovation. I don't object to people running FidoNet at all. People
should have that freedom. However there is no technical advancement
happening in FidoNet. The days when huge numbers of Sysops were
writing utilities and alternative mail programs are over. Instead of
the dozen or so businesses that wrote and supported BBS programs in
the 1980s only one or two are left.
What disturbs me sometimes is the reverse snobbery that exists in
FidoNet about the Internet. You must have come across the argument
that "I run my BBS because it's much faster than the net with all
FIDONEWS 19-20 Page 4 20 May 2002
those graphics and adverts". Instead I would prefer sysops just to say
I run FidoNet because I like it.
Fido is today a museum piece network. As relevant technically as the
360KB floppy disk.

The American Phone System
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308
Ain't the American phone companies something? For those outside of
the USA, this might be funny.... for that matter, it might be funny
anyway. :-)
Telephones are supposed to enrich our lives by allowing people to
connect to those they wish to stay in touch with... family, friends,
the bank, and such. So, we have these services to assist us...
[Caller-ID]
For a "small fee" you can get this service added to your phone.
This service is designed to allow us to see the name and phone number
of the party that is calling us. The idea is to allow us to choose to
answer the phone if it is someone we wish to talk to or ignore the
call if we don't wish to talk to that person.
Of course, some callers (salesmen, companies and "phone room
solicitors") can block this service and have their number show on your
caller-id display as "Unavailable".
Enter:
[Anonymous Call Rejection]
With this service added to your "Caller-ID", you can reject those
calls that come in as "Unavailable". This also prevents people who you
do want to talk to that might be in an area without the service from
getting through as well. Ah well, can't have everything. :) Of
course, the caller can contact the operator and have the operator put
the call through anyway, but that's a hassle.
[Call Forwarding]
Nice service. You can have your phone automatically forwarded to some
other number that you are going to be at. Like, say you are going to
grandma's house and you don't want to miss a call. Simply dial the
proper code, enter grandma's number in and there you are. Any calls to
your phone will be transferred to grandma's phone.
Of course, you can also have your calls forwarded to grandma even if
you aren't planning to visit her. If you do, I'd advise that you never
visit her again. :-)
FIDONEWS 19-20 Page 5 20 May 2002
[*66 Auto Redial]
Nice. With this, you can have your phone try to dial a number for up
to 50 minutes. You just enter the code and then hang the phone up.
When the number that is being "auto dialed" is answered, your phone
will ring.
Of course, you will then want to ignore that and then start the
process all over again until the police come to arrest you for
harassment. :-)
[*69 Auto Call Back]
If you miss a call, don't worry. You can have your phone call the
missed number back.
Just think, you get an answer from that salesman in some remote area
of the world where long distance is $45.00 a minute and s/he keeps you
on the line for 15 minutes. Nice. :)
The phone service. Gotta love it. :-)

HUMOUR IN A FIDO VEIN
=================================================================
You think Fidonet is slow?
By Frank Vest
1:124/6308.1
We've all heard the tales of speed, or lack thereof, in Fidonet. I've
never thought of Fidonet as slow. Even when it took a week or more for
messages to get delivered, it seemed fast to me. Of course, that was
in the days of dial-up only. Now, Fidonet can, and often does, get
messages delivered within hours.
The other day, I received an E-mail via the Internet. It was, of
course, a spam message telling me that I could get rich if I would
only order some number of reports from people on a list and then play
"Musical Chairs" with the people on the list by including myself at
the top of said list and removing the last person on the list. Since I
had read this kind of message before, I promptly deleted it.
The interesting thing about the message wasn't the message at all.
You see, I order my E-mail by date in Netscape. The oldest message are
on the top and the newest at the bottom. That way, when I receive a
message, I know to scroll to the bottom to read it. The mentioned
message showed in my folder and I went straight to the bottom of my
list to read the new mail..... It wasn't there. Now, this isn't all
that unusual. Sometimes the order gets a little out of shape and a new
message will appear a few message before the last one. I went up a few
messages and still could not find the thing. Finally, in desperation,
and after clicking the "Get Messages" icon for the 5th time, I went
to the "Next Message" icon. Sure enough, there was the message.... at
the top of my list.
That might not sound too bad and I really didn't think much of it. I
keep a lot of messages in my E-mail folder. Seldom do I purge old
stuff. However, this one got me to wondering why it was at the top of
the list... so, I went to the "Trash" folder to re-look at the
message. That's when I noticed the date.
12/31/69
And you think Fidonet is slow!?! :-))

CLEAN HUMOUR & JOKES

The Old Codger
By Warren Bonner <wdbonner@pacbell.net>
After living in the remote wilderness of Kentucky all his life, an old
codger decided it was time to visit the big city.
In one of the stores he picks up a mirror and looks in it. Not knowing
what it was, he remarked, "How about that! Here's a picture of my
daddy."
He bought the 'picture', but on the way home he remembered his wife,
Lizzy, didn't like his father. So he hung it in the barn, and every
morning before leaving for the fields, he would go there and look at
it.
Lizzy began to get suspicious of these many trips to the barn.
One day after her husband left, she searched the barn and found the
mirror. As she looked into the glass, she fumed, "So that's the ugly
bitch he's runnin' around with."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Star-cee's dilemma
By Ward Dossche, 2:292/854
An NC, an RC, a ZC and the IC are happily walking along a country
road.
Suddenly they happen upon a wide stream and they figure the lowest in
rank has to try to get to the other side first.
So the IC dives headfirst in the shallowest part, hits his head on the
rocks and drowns.
"Hmmm", say the others, "that was not so great".
So the ZC falls on his knees and prays: "Lord, give me the power to
reach the other side". He jumps in the water and starts swimming but
the current is too strong and he drowns as well.
"There's room for improvement" mumble the RC and the NC.
Then the RC starts praying and shouts: "Lord give me the tools to
reach the other side". So he sees a rowboat, jumps in it and starts
rowing. Unfortunately there are some hidden rocks that puncture the
boat which sinks and the RC drowns.
"Hmmmmm", murmures the NC, "There must be a better way".
FIDONEWS 19-20 Page 8 20 May 2002
So he looks around, sees a bridge less than 50 feet away and walks to
the other side.

FIDONEWS INFORMATION
=================================================================
How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:
Subject File | Subject File
----------------------------------|----------------------------------
From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb
Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net

Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor
If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
