Health care and other stuff
I'm delighted to see how well Luke's catcalls have been received.
Albeit it does no good to Luke's adrenaline glands to see his
contributions so appreciated, and thus may make him less reluctant to
continue his crusade against the ogres of the *C's of Fidonet (isn't
it ironic how *C sounds like the dreaded state police of the former
DDR when pronounced in english?).
Some may argue that comparing healthcare of USA vs. Canada is not
something that belongs in a e-zine like FidoNews. And maybe they are
right. But when I read Luke's description of the two systems, I cannot
help thinking how similar to the Canadian system the Swedish system is
fast becoming. The Swedish system, that only a couple of decades ago
was used as a model to many other social systems around the world.
And obviously many readers have started reflecting around Luke's
latest articles, so I guess they *do* have a place in our Snooze after
all.
One issue that's constantly raised is the "free" thing. I think
this is something that belongs to the dark sides of capitalism. Free
healthcare is of course not available anywhere. There ain't no such
thing as a free lunch. But IMHO healthcare should be free in so motto
as "when I'm down, please help me out until I get back on my feet
again". It's also known as solidarity in my necks of the wood.
- - = = * = = - -
Someone asked the question (in the Fidonews echo) if Luke Kolin was
a real name, or an alias. Well, those of us that were around in late
1994 remember the sordid business he was objected to at that time. If
you're interested in an "affair" that would make Hollywood screen
writers green with envy, you should try to get hold of the last issues
of FidoNews from that year, and read about stuff, that'll make the
latter days "R12 affair" look like sunday school.
- - = = * = = - -
I got an interesting letter from Spain the other day. One issue
raised was the meaning of the last half of the word FidoNews. News. I
agree with the writer. It really should be more emphasized in this
magazine. So what's new in Fidonet this week? Please write to me and
tell me. New software, new connections, new get-togethers or what else
is new?
- - = = * = = - -
Yesterday was April 14th. Exactly 90 years since Titanic went down
(actually on the hour right now). It's also 75 years since the first
Volvo car (model ÖV4, meaning "Öppen Vagn, 4 cylindrar" or, in english
"Open Vehicle, 4 cylinders") was driven out of the factory.
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 4 15 Apr 2002
Unfortunately the car had it's rear gear mounted incorrectly, so it
could only go reverse, but since then the Volvo cars have improved.
- - = = * = = - -
Yeeez it's getting late. Lucky I have six or more hours advantage
over previous Z1 editors. :)
How come, BTW, that almost no other language but swedish has a word
for the full 24 hours. The english word "day" normally means the part
of the 24 hours that the sun is up, no? In swedish we call the day
"dag" but the full 24 hours "dygn". You're welcome to borrow the word;
you must agree it would be advantageous in many situations? I wasn't
lucky enough to study latin in school, but I *think* that "diem" means
the full 24 hours, like the swedish "dygn". True or false?

What Is Fido CD-ROM Second Edition
By Michael Kleerbaum, 2:2432/203
As last year, the WIF team is again producing a CD-ROM in 2002. This
CD-ROM will be distributed free of charge at filling stations,
computer stores, corner stores and similar locations, where it will be
available to all.
The basic purpose of this activity is to draw attention to FidoNet,
and perhaps to generate enough enthusiasm that people will want to
participate using the software they receive on the CD-ROM.
The WIF CD-ROM Second Edition will be produced in a quantity of 500 -
600 CDs, but the number can be increased as required. It will be
completely financed by the private funds of the WIF Project, and is
thus completely independent. This time, we have placed particular
emphasis on the visual design to demonstrate a certain
professionalism. The CD itself is printed in color, and both the inlay
and the front cover will also be printed in color on glossy stock.
The content of the CD is organized into two sections:
1) The Information Section
In this section, the interested reader can find details and
extensive information on FidoNet. We achieve this aim by storing
the entire home page of the www.was-ist-fido.de website, with all
the details and images, as an offline version on the CD-ROM. This
presentation exists in both HTML and PDF versions. All that is
necessary to enjoy it is a browser that supports frames (no plugins
are required), or the Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or higher.
The home page is organized in such a manner that site navigation is
quite simple even if no frame support is available.
2) The Software Section
If the proud owner of the CD now decides to try out FidoNet on an
active basis, we provide a wide range of software for this purpose,
for nearly all common operating systems, whether Linux, Windows 3x,
9x, NT, ME, XP, 2000, DOS or OS/2. Each program comes with its own
illustrated installation instructions and directions for the
initial startup. We offer the choice of CrossPoint XP2, WinPoint,
APoint, FantasyPoint, FIPS, and a software package for Linux. As a
special extra, the brand new FidoDeluxe package by Michael Haase is
also included, and enables immediate participation in FidoNet using
Fido Over IP. This means that we have covered all the routes by
which FidoNet is generally accessed: modem, ISDN and DSL.
Not even an internet account is required to obtain a point number from
us. For just this purpose, the WIF also offers a FAX retrieval service
to help prospective points to register with us. In addition, we have
installed a hotline to provide direct assistance for installations and
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 6 15 Apr 2002
the initial startup.
The editorial deadline for the WID CD-ROM Second Edition is April 17,
2002, and the CD will be available by mid-May.
So what is this "WIF" anyway?
WIF stands for "What is Fido?". That is also the name (in German) of
the Internet home page www.was-ist-fido.de. Around the end of the
nineties, a few people in FidoNet (Region 24, Zone 2) got together to
finally create a long-overdue source of information on FidoNet on the
Internet. We are proud to note that our home page is the largest and
most comprehensive on FidoNet that we have seen to date. And we have
even enjoyed some success in our work. We are able to direct new
points to our partner nodes at regular intervals.
Unfortunately, we still remain a purely German-language web page,
since we have not yet assembled enough people willing and able to
translate the site into English. However, this remains a priority.

REBUTTALS TO PREVIOUS ARTICLES
=================================================================
Calling Cats that have cheap seats
By Frank Vest
Congratulations to Mr. (Cool Hand) Luke. He hit pretty good on his
article on healthcare, Canada vs USA. There is one area that was
overlooked, though.... maybe it had a slight hit, but not much.
One thing I note about the healthcare in Canada... if I'm not off
base, is that the healthcare is considered "free". I don't know where
I remember hearing this, but I remember being told that Canada was
great because the healthcare there is free.
Free? What is free? Hang in here while I try to loop this back around
to Luke's article. :) Healthcare is free?? Well, Luke seems to think
that the quality of healthcare in Canada stinks. From his description,
I'd have to agree. Luke seems to think that the quality of care in the
USA is great... at least by comparison. I'd have to agree there as
well. The real question that wasn't really dug into is the "why?".
Much of that is related to the cost.... and a lot of the cost falls
back on an area that most don't want to get into. The citizens of the
country. Yes, rather you want to admit it or not, /you/ the citizen
that uses the service, be it government or privately funded, are the
ones that pay for the service.
Now wait a minute. The healthcare is free.. That means you don't have
to pay anything, right?? Well... If you wanna believe that... ok.
I'll sell you some "prime" land I happen to not own here in the USA.
:-)
Yes folks, this may be a shock, but you pay for everything in one way
or the other. In the USA, it is said that the children can get a
"free" education. Well... sure they can. The children don't pay for
it... the adults pay for it. Oh... You thought it was free... really
free??? Tell me that each year when I get my tax statement on the
house I'm buying. "School Tax: $800.00" per year and going up. :(
How does this relate to healthcare?? Do I really need to tell you?
Naw, you're not that dumb. What I do want to do is state one reason
for the cost of healthcare. This falls back to you, the citizen.
You're probably wondering what the heck I mean, or you've already
figured this out and are hitting the "next" key.
For those who are still here.... Keep in mind that insurance
companies are not in business to lose money. As Mr. Kolin noted, one
should put in as much as one gets out of the healthcare insurance. The
insurance companies are betting that you will pay in more than you
use. If that is not the case, the insurance rates go up. When I hear
someone say "That's why I pay for insurance" and take off in their car
at 90 MHP down a street, my first thought is "There goes the insurance
rates again".
Insurance, government or private, in its simple form is a savings
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 8 15 Apr 2002
account contributed to by the members and managed by a company or
government. Each member contributes to the fund and if an emergency
happens, can withdraw funds to cover that emergency. The problem
arrives when more is being taken out of the fund for "emergency" than
is being put in. When this happens, the insurance rate increases to
cover the shortage. Simply put, if all the members are contributing
$100 a month and taking out $200 a month, the rates will have to
increase to cover the shortage.
So, next time you have a "hangnail" and think about going to the
doctor because "That's why I pay insurance", think about why your
insurance costs go up.

OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER
=================================================================
Ol'WDB's Column
wdbonner@pacbell.net
Near twenty years have come and gone, and all of them were fun in
Fido-land untill the present one. A non elected group has decided
that they will run a "new fidonet", and cause the demise of the
existing Fidonet. Their ploy is to discard and junk our policy,
replacing it with several sheets of paper they have etched their
ambitions upon. The present name for their document is P5. You see
they discovered that trashing Fidonet left them with no policy, so
they hurriedly threw "P5" together thinking that they could entice
nodes away from the real Fidonet by using modified policy itself, and
making their own nodelist. Their nodelist had five or six in it plus
some nodes that were told they could join with them and be in
Fidonet. That gave them a small number in their new node list say ten
or twelve. They realized that this was not a good showing at all! So
they decided to steal the regular Fidonet node list and incorporate it
in their "Otherlist" to make it look more real. Then were they upset
when they found out the International Coordinator would not accept it
in his weekly Fidonet nodelist. The IC authorizes nodediffs from the
six zone coordinators. This group of rebels is now very upset that
they can't take over Fidonet.
I suggest that they secede from Fidonet and form their own
"Wolfgangnet", "Doggonenet", "Dogrunnet", or what ever they want to
call it. Those few nodes in their Otherlist, are either people or they
are sheeple. If they are people they will contact their regional
coordinator for a new Fidonet node number; if not, then they can
follow their Otherlisters. They, all five or six of them, would be
happier whining to each other, and Fidonet wouldn't have to listen to
the disrespectful remarks they constantly throw at our *C's.
Our esteemed Dale Shipp and Bob Short and several others, have spent
many hours on technical modifications to Policy 4.07 to make it up to
date. The first changes to it are already with the RCC. When it is
complete it will be posted by the International Coordinator to take
effect at a date, I am told.
There is no rhyme or reason for the actions of the rebels. This week a
couple of them quit Fidonet. I am sorry to see anyone leave, but if
they have to be boss or leave... "Vaya con Dios", as Ward and Jerry
have said. This Fidonet is for nodes that want to communicate with
like kind, for ideas and instructions on how to operate a good BBS and
perhaps have a sip of Southern Comfort(TM) or Coffee Royal. 8^) On a
lighter note, did you hear about Clyde?
Clyde, a farmer in Alabama, decided his injuries from the accident he
had suffered were serious enough to take the trucking company
(responsible for the accident) to court. In court the trucking
company's fancy lawyer was questioning Clyde. "Didn't you say at the
scene of the accident, 'I'm fine?'" asked the lawyer.
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 10 15 Apr 2002
Clyde responded, "Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just
loaded my favorite mule Bessie into the..."
"I didn't ask for any details," the lawyer interrupted, "just answer
the question. Did you or did you not say 'I'm fine' at the scene of
the accident?"
Clyde said, "Well, yes, but I had just got Bessie into the trailer and
was driving down the road..."
The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to
establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told
the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several
weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he
is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question."
By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde's answer and
said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his
favorite mule, Bessie."
Clyde thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well, like I was saying, had
just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving
her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the
stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into
one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other ditch on other side of
the road. I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move. However, I
could hear old Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible
shape just by her groans. "About that time a Highway Patrolman came
on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went
over to her. "After he looked at her he took out his gun and shot her
between the eyes. "Then the Patrolman came across the road with his
gun in his hand and looked at me and said, 'And, how are you
feeling?"
Warm Regards

FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN
=================================================================
Japanese Daikon Chicken Soup
4 ea Chicken legs/thighs (1 lb)
4 ea Slices daikon
6 oz Dry red beans
3 ea Satsuma Imo
1 tb Dry parsley
2 ts Ginger, fresh, grated
1 ts Marjoram
Water to cover plus 2 inches
This is more of my 'outa stuff' cookery. I just didnt feel like
going to the Tonoo Market Street but needed some food handy. Here's
the result and it's a winner!
The Satsuma Imo is a japanese local 'sweet yam' which isnt as sweet
as the North American type, nor as large. Mashed those 3 would make
about 1.5 cups (or perhaps a bit less). Red fleshed with a thin skin
and a mild yellow interior, this is a good vegetable to have handy.
Lasts a very long time in the crisper. These I just added whole and
they have largely just disappeared into the soup, skin and all. Peeled
North American type would work as a substitute.
The daikon flavors the soup base. For looks, you may want to remove
the cooked portions and add fresh in at serving time for the 'crunch'
they would add. Substitute mild North American Radishes if Daikon
isnt available where you are.
You may also want to try white beans vice the red I had handy. If
you are out of fresh ginger, dried would likely work here. As this
isn't traditional 'Japanese' I didn't add that catagory. I wanted to
prevent possible confusion.

CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES
=================================================================
BASTARD OPERATOR FROM HELL #12
I get to work and I'm a bit tired so I plug a thick hunk of copper
across the three phase supply and throw the switch. The room is
plunged into darkness as the circuit breakers trip and for once the
machine room is silent.
I like it.
I pop the phone off the hook and close the curtains on the observation
window. Now it's *really* dark in there. I wouldn't be surprised if
someone had an accident in here..
I lift a couple of floor tiles up in the darkness and call our
maintenance contractors saying the mini popped the breaker again, then
replace the fuses in it with a couple of nails and short the power
supply to ground. You can't just hope for this sort of thing, you've
got to MAKE it happen.
15 minutes later the engineer arives and falls down the hole. I pop
the floor tiles back on just as the System Manager (a new and very
thorough individual) comes in, telling me to watch out, someone could
really hurt themselves in the dark...
I nod & tell him that we can't really afford all the downtime, and
should I just throw the breaker and hope that there was no major
fault. After thinking about the negative publicity we're getting
already, he makes the last decision of his short career and tells me
to go ahead.
Later, when the smoke clears I examine the smoking remains of the
mini. Not a pretty sight...
"Strange that the breaker jammed shut, isn't it?" I say to our manager
as he packs up the personal things in his office. "One in a million
chance. A pity that someone saw what you did and posted the whole
story to comp.misc. You'll be lucky to get a job managing a car
computer after all that publicity..."
I go back to the machine room and throw the rest of the breakers to
liven everything up, then login and start deleting users'
email. I spot an interesting off-the-record sexual proposition from
our male consultant to a member of the men's swim team which will make
a good motd, so I copy it there, modify root's owner name to be
"Winker" and password to be "ljkadlkajflkj" (then call the big boss to
report a suspected intrusion). Should be at least a couple of hours
of login time before we can sort that out. In the meantime, people
are just going to have to read that message... I realise the message
has been read when I hear the gunshot from behind the consultant's
closed door.
I edit the online helpdesk information and change the phone number to
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 13 15 Apr 2002
the System Manager's - he'll probably appreciate the extra calls at
such a sad time...
I hear another shot and realise he won't be answering any calls today.
I put the phone back on the hook and flip today's excuse card. "Poor
power conditioning". Too plausible. "STATIC BUILDUP". Still a bit
too plausible for my liking, but I don't want to run out of cards
before the end of the year, so I decide to run with it.
The phone rings almost as soon as I've got "Top Gun" in the video
machine so I pause the video and put the phone on hands-free.
"I think I've bought a bad floppy disk"
"Yes?" I wonder if I've suddenly become the consumer's watchdog?
"Well, I've got this disk and it won't format. All the others in the
box did so I thought I must have a bad disk"
"Why are you calling me about this?" I ask
"Well, the disk says guaranteed; where do I go to get a replacement?"
Ah! Of course.
"Well, let's see. Are you sure it's the disk, and not just some
problem with static buildup?"
"Huh?"
"Static Buildup, you know, static electricity that's passed from you
to the computer"
"But I'm wearing a wrist strap!"
Around about now I realise I'm deep in dweeb country. Wrist straps
aren't fashion accessories in my part of town...
"Of course you are, but your average wrist strap has a 1 meg resistor
in series with it, a *really* poor earth. What you need is a direct
earth connection. Hang onto the frame of something that's earthed
properly."
"What, you mean like our stainless steel bench?"
"Excellent. Now, have you got a paper clip to discharge the static
with?"
"Hang on. Yeah"
"Ok, with your other hand, poke the clip thru the ventilation holes at
the back of the unit, and just touch the contact at the end of the
thick red wire."
"The one going to the power supply?"

Out of the mouths of children...
By Warren Bonner
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening
when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She
was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my
five-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom! That lady isn't wearing
a seat belt!"
On the first day of school, a first grader handed his teacher a note
from his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed by this child
are not necessarily those of his parents."
A woman was trying hard to get the catsup to come out of the jar.
During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her four-year old
daughter to answer the phone. "It's the minister, Mommy," the child
said to her mother. Then she added, " Mommy can't come to the phone to
talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."
I love the outdoors, and because of my passion for hunting and
fishing, my family eats a considerable amount of wild game. So much,
in fact, that one evening as I set a platter of broiled venison steaks
on the dinner table, my ten-year-old daughter looked up and said,
"Boy, it sure would be nice if pizzas lived in the woods."
When my daughter was three, we watched Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
for the first time. The wicked queen appeared, disguised as an old
lady selling apples, and my daughter was spellbound. Then Snow White
took a bite of the poisoned apple and fell to the ground unconscious.
As the apple rolled away, my daughter spoke up. "See, Mom. She doesn't
like the skin either."
A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's
locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with
ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched
in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter -- haven't you ever
seen a little boy before?"
A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday School presentation. His
mother, sitting in the front row to prompt him, gestured and formed
the words silently with her lips, but it didn't help. Her son's memory
was blank. Finally she leaned forward and whispered the cue, "I am the
light of the world." The child beamed and with great feeling and a
loud, clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world."
A teacher asked her students to draw a picture of their favorite Old
Testament story, and as she moved around the class, she saw there were
FIDONEWS 19-15 Page 15 15 Apr 2002
many wonderful drawings being done. Then she came across Johnny who
had drawn a man driving an old car. In the back seat was a
scantily-clad man and woman. "It's a lovely picture," said the
teacher, "but which story does it tell?" Johnny seemed surprised at
the question. "Well," he exclaimed, "doesn't it say in the Bible that
God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden?"
That's All Folks!

How to Submit an Article
If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here
are some guidelines, if you send it as an attached file; the preferred
method if you want reasonable control over how the published article
will appear in the Fidonews:
a) Plain ASCII text. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's
probably quite OK...
b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first
time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on
the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the
format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index,
the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put
your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you
may want to add some other address where you can be reached for
personal comments.
c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC.
Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects
and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration
file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up
to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the
correct subject on the file name if known..
Ideas for Subject areas:

If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT
on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews.
If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem
in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out
of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message
sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your
article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I
can not fix and I need your help on it.
